Why does Avast 10.4.2233 download http at approximately one quarter of the speed achieved with Avast 10.2.2215?
My modest Athlon XP 3000+ powered Windows XP system manages 7,800 kbps with Avast 10.2.2215 but only 2,100 kbps with Avast 10.4.2233. The bandwidth of the ADSL2+ connection allows a maximum of 8,000 kbps.
Web scanning is enabled on each of the two versions in question.

Later Avast versions screw up with Mozilla Thunderbird on Windows XP;
My processor can only run software compatible with pre-SSE2 processors;
Slow http download speeds.
I would use the latest version if only I were able to. I am content with Avast 10.2.2215 which is very light on resources.
Why is there such a considerable difference between the versions with http speed? This is what I would like to know. Is it because Avast 10.4.2233 is more thorough than Avast 10.2.2215 with its web scanning? There must be a reason.
1] It is just a matter of setting up thunderbird/the email account(s) correctly.
2] The latest avast version is working fine on non SSE2/SSE3 systems.
3] No problem on my XP system
Avast 11 installer fails with my pre-SSE2 processor (‘illegal instruction’ or similar message). Avast 10.4.2233 will install and run but slows http/https downloads unacceptably.
Never mind. Avast 10.2.2215 behaves well. Shame there is no https web scanning with Windows XP but you can’t have everything I suppose. Avast 10.2.2215 works with Thunderbird without any need to do any special setting up so I guess that later versions of Avast were not tested with Thunderbird on Windows XP so users must find a workaround, if they can.
I know that BUT Avast 10.4.2233 is much slower than Avast 10.2.2215 when it comes to downloading http traffic. It is so slow that that is the reaon I elect to use the older version.
but I would like to use Avast 10.4.2233 if only the considerable and unexplained reduction in http/https download speed did not occur. I guess that more recent processors than mine are fast enough to mitigate the problem. Avast version 10.2.2215 was succeeded by versions with a lot of innovations and difficulties for Windows XP users, especially those who use Thunderbird.
Thank you David. There seem to be no socket 462 processors which execute SSE2 instructions so I have to accept a brick wall between me and new versions of software.
Avast 10.4.2233 does not require an SSE2 processor but there seems to be a difference between its web scanning and the web scanning by Avast 10.2.2215 so that my AMD Athlon XP 3000+ has insufficient power to perform web scanning with Avast 10.4.2233 without considerable loss of download speed. I am now reconciled to that situation.
I had to put AVG Free 2015 out to grass after I began to experience repeated abortions of the AV scanner process. Using Avast Free 10.2.2215 has unexpectedly supercharged my browsers on my slow(ish) hardware. It has also changed, nay improved, the sequence in which web pages load, most notably The Guardian newspaper web site http://www.theguardian.com/uk where the text previously appeared then disappeared before finally coming back ‘on’. This is a performance tweak I never expected. Even my favourite old Opera 12.17 browser works better.
BTW, AVG Free has no web scanner equivalent of Web Shield, relying on its basic AV scanner for stuff arriving at the browser.
Those who designed and coded the Avast 10.2.2215 web scanner software will probably nod knowingly at these words.
