Avast was brilliant for a while but for the last 2 weeks has not been able to connect although I am definitely connecting. Red box comes up with the following message -
Information about current update:
Last encountered error: Cannot connect to download1.avast.com (67.19.179.10:80).
Are you refering to automatic updates (at startup) or manual ones?
Which is your operational system? Do you use a firewall? Which one?
Is avast.setup allowed to connect and perform the update?
Make sure your browser is not set to “Work Offline” (this option is generally in the File menu). If it doesn’t help, try switching the proxy settings from “Auto-detect” to “No proxy” (I’m assuming you’re not connecting to the Internet via proxy).
Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy
In reply to Tech, answers to questions.
1 Automatic updates
2. Windows 98
3.I have no firewall, and a 7
year old computer
4. I have changed nothing since it operated perfectly.
5. The Avast Icon on my desktop doesnt come up with Left click the avast icon > Settings
Update (Basic) > Details > Proxy at all, just simple user interface. R click has a “Properties” but this doesnt have settings either.
6. Definitely not on “work offline” as I am nearly always connected.
If you try a manual update after boot and the Internet is connected for sure, can you update?
If so, better will be changing the value AlwaysConnectedWaitSeconds into section [InetWD] of avast4.ini file: http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=1647.msg10264#msg10264
Tech is the real expert here but I thought I’d jump in with some generic advice.
First of all, a firewall is essential. A computer on the net will be attacked within 40 seconds and invaded by worms, Trojan horses, viruses and spyware within minutes. Very soon that computer may end up as part of a spybot network an be used in illegal activities like spamming and blackmail. All this can be prevented by downloading a free firewall.
I like Kerio. Download this or another firewall. (I suggest you choose simple mode when installing.)
If you haven’t already, please could you scan your computer with these anti-spyware programs. Download the programs, update them and scan for and remove any spyware.
