my avast seems to blocks justin tv

Hi all,

I’m using Avast, latest version, on Win XP SP3… all modules loaded (instant messaging, internet mail, network shield, standard shield, web shield, Outlook, P2P…) default settings.

Since the past few days, I find that I can’t get the streaming video on www.justin.tv to load (play), unless I stop avast! on-access protection. (I’m using Firefox 3.0.6 and Internet Explorer 7)

Anybody else experience this? Perhaps it’s one of my settings that I could change in Avast?

Thanks!

Yes I have the same issue. Started in the last couple of days. I thought it was my flash settings, or some kind of adblocker/script blocker, nope. Finally decided to disable Avast, and restarted the browser, and the videos came up fine. There is a false positive than needs to be fixed asap.

EDIT: Issue seems to be with WebShield part of Avast, disabling just that, makes the videos load. This is a big security risk though. Adding justin.tv as an exception does not work either.

Others on the justin.tv help chat that have avast are having issues also.

Thanks for your reply. Well, it would be nice if the avast team can fix this issue soon!

The problem commonly stems from (as far as I’m aware) some streaming using the HTTP port (80) doesn’t fully conform to the HTTP Protocol that the web shield rightly expects.

Disabling avast or the web shield is the blunderbuss approach when you need a sniper.

Web Shield, Customize, Basic tab, Ignored addresses: and enter the IP addres of the site, not the domain name.

Thanks for your reply, but the issue is still there, even after entering the ip address.

It has two IP, 213.155.157.26 and 213.155.157.73 have you entered both ?

Unfortunately I can’t do any checks as I’m on dial-up so streaming video us out for me.

Although I don’t believe you should have to, you could (after entering the IPs) terminate the web shield and then start it again.

Right I found a short clip 26 seconds and having added both IPs to the Ignored addresses I was able to view that short clip once it downloaded.

Tried that and didnt work. After the video tries to load, it will default to archived videos its the people trying to broadcast live videos, is where the issue is. Everything loads on the page, pics, chat etc, but not the live feeds. This person is live right now, but wont load: http://www.justin.tv/swiftor

Well I can’t see why it works for me and not you, I use XP Pro SP3, firefox 3.0.6, so I don’t know if this is a browser or OS issue As I said on dial-up I really can do much more to help I wouldn’t know if the video is stalled or just darn slow.

However, whilst I entering this I’m getting bits of the sound track booming through so it is coming down albeit very slow. Going back to that page I get the occasion al clip (as it loads) of the video (car wreck).

Ya its weird. If you are getting the car wrecks, that an archived video, right now they are live and playing a PS3 game called Resistence 2, i know this cause webshield is disabled and i can see the live stream. Oh well, i guess we will wait and see. Thanks for your time.

Well I really don’t know exactly what it was I was watching, coming in 1-2 second blips but the part I watched (archive or otherwise) would I assume still have to come down in the same way. I just checked again and it is saying not broadcasting.

Thanks DavidR… it worked great for me… I did as you suggested, i.e. I entered the 2 IP addresses, separated by a comma and I put no space between them… (solid string)…
Kudos for your help!
(p.s. I’m using Firefox 3.0.6, Win XP, SP3)

This has been quite a strange one.

I find (without explanation yet) that if I access (with my browser Firefox) any site within justin.tv I have a problem with getting the streaming video to run (even though it is not using any port in which avast takes an interest for the streaming video).

If I then disable avast (Webshield) and try again the streaming video (to reinforce the point - on a port in which avast takes no interest) works just fine. Any subsequent attempt to open a site I have already got working in justin.tv works with avast running in its normal configuration (with Webshield running again) without problem for me. Clearing the cache in Firefox does not impact the connection ability on these subsequent contacts.

Perhaps the avast team have an explanation.

HI Alan,
I didn’t check what ports were being used for the stream (never even though about that), I just tried the ignored IPs so that the web shield would take no interest (but that does have an element of risk if justin tv has any dubious input).

Any checking on dial-up was an exercise in futility for me, but your results are most strange as you would like to hope there would be a degree of consistency, hopefully we will get some input from the Alwil team.
