i have avast 4.7 home edition free version installed on my laptop and my desktop using the same email address. both on vista and both with the same reg. key. laptop installed first i think. the settings on both are the same.(auto update and all)
anyway the laptop seems to auto update properly with the flag pop up in the lower right corner of the screen and the guy saying,“VIRUS DATABASE HAS BEEN UPDATED”. 1 or 2 times a day. the desktop never does anything. well i see the little a-ball icon spinning sometimes. but it never does the update thing. windows defender tells me every day or 2 that im out of date so i update manually.
could the problem be that i use the same email address for both or maybe i can only have it on one pc per household?
avast settings are exactly the same on both. i right click on the a-ball and goto settings… those are all set same.
are there other settings i should check?
both have this edition;
Build: Dec2007 (4.7.1098)
Xtreme Toolkit version 1.9.4.0
Using Active Skin version 4.2.7.3
my windows auto update systems also have the same settings as do the firewalls.
anything else? and thank you for your time david. r u from oregon btw?

Why Bob? ???
C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe (avast! Update Service) does not need access rights. avast, as you know, uses avast.setup to connect and update…
what exactly is my problem? i thought i wrote it very clear in the first post. the actual prob is that its annoying to manually update all the time(every day or two). i have reinstalled avast also. what dont you understand? umm… if i rephrased it it would probably come out like the first post. that was the simplest way i could put it i thought.
and
my firewalls allow the exact same progs through…

What about your update settings? Check the pictures below by clicking on them to enlarge them. If you are not on dial-up like I am, you should have the second box checked in the second picture.
it just started working. i dont know why. an update for my windows defender popped up and i installed it with a few other vista updates. really weird cuz both computers had the same updates.
oh well, at least it works. im not gonna try to figure out why. thank you all for your concern.
