Which is your operational system?
Do you use (or used) any other antivirus in this machine?
What were you doing when that errors occur? Running a scanning, opening avast, booting the computer?
Repair thing is when you go to uninstall it and there is the option to repair.
“So basically you do not get to finish the scan and then immediatly restarts the computer?” yes Avast will not complete a full scan gets a ways into it and then reboots.
Can you can go to the program settings and turn on the creation of the report file (with “OK files” to be included as well in the report). This way, you can find out where the scan really stopped (it’s going to be close to the end of the report).
After booting, check the end of the report file - the “troublesome” file is likely to be close to the end (close in the sense that this particular file will probably not be written in the report, but the previous one will be the last line, so it shouldn’t be hard to guess). We would certainly like to have this file - if it really causes problems to avast! - so that we could fix the problem.
The report file created (if you turned it on in program settings) will be (default location) at \Data\Report\Simple User Interface.txt
Are you using Windows XP?
Can you schedule a boot-time scanning?
Start avast! > Right click the skin > Schedule a boot-time scanning.
Select for scanning archives.
Boot.
If infected files are found, it’s safer to send them to Chest instead of deleting them.
This way you can further analysis them.
Note: are the computers fans working? Sudden turn off could be related to overheat…
Thanks I will try what you have said and go from there. I just recently uninstalled it and put a clean fresh install of it. The only issue now is that it does not automatcially download the updates though I have it all set for it to do so. I run Zone alarm but the options are set to allow Avast what it request for updates, as I can manually install or run the updates myself. .
avast checks if there is an available connection each 40 seconds. If there isn’t, wait more 40 seconds to check. Checking does not take more than one second and, of course, does not use the Internet band. If there is a connection, check for an update. If there is not any new file to download, wait 4 hours to start checking again. If there is an available update, start it and install it. Again, wait 4 hours to check the next time.
Some of this settings could be configurated different, I posted the default values of the avast4.ini file.
Aren’t you seeing any automatic updates waiting with the computer working for more than 4 hours?
Glad to know…
But did you think anything, change anything, … it will be good to know in case we can help the others more efficiently when we learn about our own helpings… 8)
