Need both Avast and Alwil folders??

Under C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data, I have both an Alwil Software folder (containing ‘Avast 5’) and an Avast Software folder (containing ‘Avast’). I don’t remember if I ever did a clean install of avast6 or later, but do I need both folders? If not, which one should I keep and which one delete? Thanks

You must have done a clean install at some point at or after avast 6, otherwise program updates from the UI would have retained the Alwil Software folder structure.

The new folder structure represents the change in company name, Avast Software, so that is the one you should retain.

I would suggest that you make the change by using the aswClear.exe Uninstall Utility (rather than just delete the folder) and run that for avast 5, this should remove that old folder and possibly any registry entries that refer to the old company name.

  • Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for all versions).
    1. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility, it will request it be run from safe mode (and will handle the boot into safe mode)- Once in safe mode select avast! 5.x from the drop down list, once complete reboot into normal mode.
