need help in working avast

hey i just downloaded avast home and had my first scan. it says that i have some virus’ and then it gives me options to repair or delete it. prob is that when i try to repair the file, avast always tell me that it can’t be repaired :o can someone plz tell me how to get avast to repair the files instead of deleting them? thx!

Can you tell me which file is it (full path and filename) and a virus name that avast! showed it to you on detection.

In these days there are mostly worms that don’t actually infect any files, they just copy specific files which can be simply deleted when detected.
Repair function is only for viruses that infect system files (very rare or none in these days).

  1. Virus name- Win32:Trogan-gen {Other}
    File- c:\WINDOWS\TEMP\B18.cab\bi.dll
  2. Virus name- Win32: Trojano-214 [Trj]
    File- c:\WINDOWS/TEMP/polmx2.cab\polmx2.exe
  3. Virus name- Win32:\Swizzor [Trj]
    File- c:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5…

If you could figure out whats wrong i’d really REALLY appreciate it. thx! ^^

Before doing anything else, be sure your avast is up-to-date. There were 2 updates on 8/27/04. Once updated, do a re-scan. :slight_smile:

Since these files are all in TEMP or Temporary Interternet Files, it should be safe to delete all of them. There is no need to repair these files since they are only temporary in their use.

If, by chance, you are not allowed to delete them (or you feel uncomfortable with deleting them), then send them to the Virus Chest. :slight_smile:

^^ thx for your help.

Glad to help … and welcome to the forums! :slight_smile:

Comp,

Avast cannot repair those files since they are executables, and you have not opened them. The “infection” is contained within the exe file.

It is then safe to delete them by following the path given in the Avast message to the “suspected” file.
