I have xp3 on a gateway computer with dsl from att.
I have avast 5.0.418 free version .When I start computer from a cold boot the icon shows no protection
This did not happen with older version. Then when it finally changed to show I was protected, I could not get on the internet. Computer would not recognize modem. I already tried uninstall and install again. Please help.
What other security software are you using, firewall in particular. Is this an upgrade from 4.8 or a previous avast! 5 installation that worked correctly? What kind of DSL modem? Are you using a router?
I have zone alarm version 5.5.094.00 and a motorola modem.
Should I update to a newer version of avast 5 if one is available, the free edition or should I update to the Pro version paid?

I am using wireless. It is an update from 4.8.
Try updating avast to 5.0.462 and see if that helps.
