Need help with Win32.Brontok virus....New here :)

We are running XP, unable to get online…keeps shutting down when we try to open Internet Explorer or Firefox. AVG scan does not detect anything. But we get a pop-up warning from our OS about the virus. What can we do to get rid of it? Thanks so much for your help!!!

Its possible you do not have the real Brontok ( nasty ), as you say you are getting warnings from your OS.These ‘warnings’ may be coming from some fake/rogue program, asking you to install/buy it.
What you could try is, using another pc, download the following two programs.MBAM and SAS.If this is a rogue program you may have difficulty running them.
Anyhow give it a try, transfer the programs onto bad pc, along with the update files, via CD. Install, then exit programs, then double click on update files, with SAS, you need to exit and restart. Run both updated programs, and post the results.

AVG? But this is avast forum? ???

Try uninstalling AVG vai control pannel then use the removal tool then download Avast! and run a boot-time scan. It might find the virus/rogue.

Why do you use AVG and post on the Avast! forum anyway?

Never advisable to first uninstall your AV, ‘before’ downloading a replacement. You should always have downloaded and saved and replacement in preparation, ‘before’ uninstalling any existing protection.

I am posting here because I did a general search on the topic and this site was in the results. I honestly did not know that Avast was a virus software, but I will definitely look into it as one to use on my home computer now. I do not know where the AVG came from, the computer was/is my boyfriend’s and I had nothing to do with the set-up/install.

I would hope that no one here would be offended by that…but if so, I apologize! Thank you for your help anyway. It is greatly appreciated.

AVG is possibly the most downloaded free antivirus.
Then Avast,
then Avira.
The Avast forum is probably the most helpful. Most of us are probably (and justifiably) biased, but general opinion here is that Avast offers better protection that AVG.
No reason not to ask here about a problem, even if you are not an Avast user. Mostly our expertise is about Avast antivirus, but for a lot of folk it goes beyond that. Help will usually be offered.
And now, we are going to turn you ;D ;D ;D

Your wrong http://download.cnet.com/windows/ Avira,AVG,Avast! but i can say Avast! is more usefull for me

Those numbers refer to downloads from Cnet.
The actual figure might be quite different, as Cnet is not the only place where downloads take place from.
Prepared to accept I might be wrong, but not too worried about that.
But you, get your facts straight.

I tought you was talking only about Cnet so well i can say Avast! Home for a free anti virus is really usefull and for paid anti virus i can say Avast! Pro win for me (even if i didnt tried Pro i just look at the features and its seem to rock !!! I wish if i could)

This is my first posting ever. I just had to say “thanks”. This Malwarebytes Antimalware is some powerful stuff. Not only did it get rid of the fake Brontok message (which a few antivirus’ and spyware cleaners have missed), but also it caught a rogue REGTool thing as well as a few other Trojans. Once again, Thank you very much

Tim

Welcome to avast forums

Hello guys I also had a similar issue… but with different problems…No internet access, could not open REGedit, I tried AVG and AVAST none of them found the Trojan until I downloaded Malwarebytes (showed up as TROJAN.FAKEAlert) I’ve spent the last two days trying to find a fix and found your Blog today which was helpful…
Thanks…
