need Info please

Hi, this is my first post here ever. I am Mac, you don’t need to use the Muz part, all the Mac’s were taken everywhere on line when I got into using the computer.

I am no computer wizard by any means so if any one should reply I need whole real words, and don’t understand 3 letters things much if at all…

I run win 98 2nd edition, on a 2000 modle Dell XPS T 750 and use a 56k modum.

I had at one time Norton which had messed up my registry some how and while I use Juno to be on line my old account with Earthlink still has the Earthlink logo in the upper right of my browser.

I hope to f disk this sytem soon and up grade to win xp, but I can’t just now.

Nealy 60 days ago someone told me to get avast, and they intended for me to get the free for home use kind.

Instead I made an error and got the version 4.7 for pro use, when I need the home use…

Someone else told me I need a Avast uninstaller, and don’t know if I have to use that or add remove with work.

What I want to do is remove the 4.7 pro in a reasonable manor, and then install the home version 4.

Do I need the Avast un-installer?

treat me like I am stupid… i do a lot of otther things well, but not this stuff… I am a tad too old to learn new tricks… Thank you …Mac

Go to start > Settings > Control Panel

In there double click add/remove programs

Locate avast! and click add/remove.

Follow the instructions to remove avast.

After you finish uninstall reboot/restart your computer.

When your computer restarts go into internet explorer and browse to the following link:

http://files.avast.com/files/eng/aswclear.exe

Download and install the file. This is the avast! uninstaller that was mentioned to you.

In the enter path box put this path:

C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4

Then click uninstall. After uninstall completes this way, reboot your computer and you are ready to install avast! home edition.

Hello and Welcome Mac_Muz

Actually you don’t heed to uninstall anything - all you need to do is to register HERE and when you receive your license (the e-mail contains the instructions for entering the license code into avast!) for the Home version, just enter it into your avast! Pro installation and the program will automatically downgrade to the Home version (please note that you need an active Internet connection for this)

Thankyou for the repiles… I followed the tips posted by XMAS, since for me it seemed the lesser of 2 evils.

While I don’t know much, the info appears to have worked. And so now I can finish details I have and get them backed up.

I don’t understand the How to of downloading things well and end up making horrible errors. recently I learned about how to back up the registry and found the avast registry cleaner, which I was able to use on a one by one mething for 96 errors.

But something some where is still wrong. I should not see anything to do with earthlink in a on line browser since I am using juno now.

Juno has a problems as well which can lock up the system any time, but mainly does when I want to go off line and shut down. That happens about 99% of the time.

I have done scan disk and defraged and hunted hard in the registry and can not determine what is wrong…

I mainly use this system for e-mailing since that works better for my hearing impaired old mechanics ears, and to text in forums much like this except the issues are motorbike related where i do know a few things…

I do a few other not so social forums concerning fire arms, and I guess if you want to find me for any of that, a google gets you to where I post. I was some what amazed at typing my handle into google just for kicks thinking about nothing would pop up on me, but lo…there I am! ::slight_smile:

Thank you once again… I guess if there is a bad part of me knowing about this place it will be because I don’t know how and so will come whine and beg for help… Ouch… mac

You’re Welcome ;D

As CharleyO said - just ask when you need help 8)

I don’t know of any avast registry cleaner: only avast anti-virus; avast cleaner, which is a stand alone cleaner for a limited number of worms/viruses; or the avast Uninstall Utility, which only cleans avast entries in the registry.

 Hi Mac :

It appears you did NOT COMPLETELY REMOVE "Earthlink" from your
computer !? Have you gone into the "Add or Remove Programs" in your
"Control Panel" and clicked on each "Earthlink" listing and selected to
"uninstall" it ? If yes, there are probably "leftovers", which you can find
by clicking "start" in the lower left-hand corner of your screen, then
left-clicking "Search", selecting "All files and folders", enter the Search
"term" "earthlink", click the "Search" button there and when the "list"
appears, right-click any "earthlink" item and select "Delete". This will
"send" those Items to your "Recycle Bin", which you then click to "Delete"
  the Items there.
