Need Some Help with NoScript

I love NoScript but I need some help. Is there a list somewhere that tells which you should allow and which you should block?

This site only has forum.avast.com and google-analytics (which I have marked as untrusted), but some sites have 15 or so sites. I’m trying to read an article on howstuffworks.com, but none of the buttons or links work. There are so many sites, I don’t know which to allow or mark as untrusted.

Also, is there any word of NoScript’s developer being any closer to having NoScript for Chrome?

There is no such list that I’m aware of, I don’t go to the point of setting many as untrusted.

I generally only allow the main site and you should see what ells is blocked by noscript by the noscript icon where blocked data/images would be. Hovering your mouse over that icon would display the relevant site, either as a tooltip or in the status bar at the bottom of the window.

Adding to David’s feedback:

None that I know of. You may find NOSCRIPT QUICK START GUIDE FOR BEGINNERS helpful. It’s usually safe to allow the top-level site – when necessary – if you’re sure it’s not a malicious site especially crafted to deliver malware.

As far as I can tell, it’s sufficient to Allow howstuffworks.com. It seems to work even if I don’t allow any additional sites. This is in my Firefox test profile that has no other extensions. I’m using NoScript’s default settings in Fx 3.6.6 and NoScript 1.9.9.99. Can you give me the URL of your problematic article? By the way, in general, if your ever having a problem getting a page to work, we’re glad to help out in the NoScript Support Forum. http://forums.informaction.com/viewforum.php?f=7

I just noticed that if you’re using Adblock Plus with the fanboy-stats list, then a bug in the list blocks all scripts on howstuffworks.com. That bug has been fixed now. Update the list by pressing Ctrl+Shift+T in the Adblock Plus Preferences window if you’re using Adblock Plus with that list.

Except for NoScript’s default whitelist, all other sites are blocked by default. It’s not necessary to add them to the “untrusted” list too. The “untrusted” list is mostly used to unclutter the UI by not displaying those sites even when they’re blocked. I rarely bother to mark a site as untrusted. google-analytics.com may be the only one on my untrusted list, but not because it delivers malware. It’s just so ubiquitous that I’m tired of even seeing it listed as blocked.

From NS in Chrome (a few things have changed)

by Giorgio Maone » Fri Jul 02, 2010 7:41 am A NoScript implementation is currently still impossible, albeit easier once the other pieces of the puzzle go to their place. Specifically, I've asked Google to provide an API to at least see the current permissions as set by Chrome's built-in user interface (if not write them, which would allow NoScript to replace or augment the UI with a more familiar one), so that embeddings can be blocked/enabled according to permissions, rather than duplicating whitelists/blacklists.

Thanks for those links Alan.

You’re welcome.
