avast is an antivirus and protects you against infections.
You need a good firewall. Are you using Vista or XP?
With Windows’ firewall, disable exceptions in hotspots:

I am using Win XP Pro. The only firewall that I’ve seen that provides wireless security is Zone Alarm. Would you recommend it? Thanks.
Windows firewall and any other firewall will provide security if used correctly. Follow the advice in these links:

As well as Zone Alarm, the Sunbelt/Kerio and Comodo firewalls are worth considering if you’re after a free alternative to the Windows firewall.

I suggest Comodo or PCTools on a XP system.
sorry to jump in but does a hacker of a wireless network still have to get through a software firewall before they access your info. I have Comodo V2.4
