new babe's question

I am using the Avast Home first time. Good scanning speed, I like it.
It identified “dcfssvc.exe” as a false positive. This is for my Kodak digital camera.
How to configure Avast not to report it as a virus.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Ahyangor…

Someone else will be able to tell you where exactly but you should be able to copy the file name to the exclusions list.

Best Regards…

What’s the name of the malware reported in that file?

A google search for dcfssvc.exe returns many hits that would appear to a false positive but should be confirmed on one of the multi-engined on-line scanners.

Sorry I should have given more details about the file:

File name: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\dcfssvc.exe
Malware name: Win32:Trojan-gen.(vc)
malware type: Virus
VPS version: 0618.1.05/03/2006

Hope this helps.

Hi all…

???

So where can Ahyangor type the file name to have Avast overlook the file? That’s what he was asking. That is, if it’s a false positive.

Best Regards…

Ahyangor, please pack the file with ZIP or RAR, protecting it with a password, and send the file to virus@avast.com for inspection (preferably with a “False positive” subject, or something like that).
Thanks!

I copied the path and the file name to the Program-setting’s EXCLUSIONS list, but
it didn’t work.
Does anyboby else care to the new babe out ?
Please and thank you.

Hi Ahyangor,

There are 2 exclusions. One for the on-access scanner and one for the on-demand scanner.

On Access
Right Click a-icon
Click On-Access Protection Control
Highlight Standard Shield
Click Customize
Click Advanced Tab
Click Add
Type the path you want to exclude and hit Enter

On Demand
Right Click the a-icon
Click Programs Settings …
Click Exclusions
Click Add
Type the path you want to exclude and hit Enter

Thank you very much.
I know Ican count on you guys.
Happy avast!ing.

That information is also in the (Mini Sticky) False Positives link I gave in my previous post.

Very sorry DavidR.
I was too hyper.
Thanks again.

I understand ;D

A belated welcome to the forums.

Please don’t forget to send us the file so that we can fix the false positive. Thanks.

Hi guys here is my update

I followed the instructions given by MAUSERME. As soon as the computer reboot,
the message came up again:
File name: C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\dcfssvc.exe
Malware name: Win32:Trojan-gen.(vc)
malware type: Virus/Worm
VPS version: 0618.1.05/03/2006
So the computer did not see the camera, ie, Adobe Photoshop couldn’t get the pictures from it.
However the report said it skipped scanning the file because it was on the Exclusion list.

The next thing I will do:
rename the file “dcfssvc.exe” to something like “dcfssvc.old”
uninstall Avast 4
reinstall Avast 4
do a full scan
rename the file back to “dcfssvc.exe”
Do you have any thought?

ignor
The file will be sent to Avast! for analysis next Monday.

If you mean Photoshop Album this utilizes Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) and I believe the Kodak DC series of cameras is WIA capable. You can just click Get Photos in the tool bar after specifying the drive letter in Edit/Preferences/Camera or Card Readers. ie You might not need the pop up dcfssvc.exe provides when you connect your camera.

If this works you might want to consider just removing dcfssvc.exe from your computer.

I would also either take David’s advice about a multi-engine scanner or at least scan with Ewido (available here http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ )

Edit: You may have to uninstall the Kodak Imaging software for WIA to work.

Also, here is a list of WIA supported cameras http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en;293168 (look under Eastman Kodak).

Thanks very much mauserme for your help. You must have spent a lot of time
researching information on this troublesome matters. Ths Microsoft WIA couldn’t
solve my problem because I am still using Windows 98.

I will kook into Ewido and report later.

If you add the “dcfssvc.exe” file to the ignore lists as has been suggested, then you shouldn’t have to do this.

Sorry, Ewido won’t run on Win98. Try A- Squared instead

http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/

a square,
Ad-aware,
spy-bot search and destroy
all give me clean reports.

I used to have, Antivir and Norton Antivirus which also didn’t report “dcfssvc.exe” is a virus.

Avast4 !!!
