New download problem - Opera plugin & program update

I just downloaded Avast, replacing an old, corrupted antivirus. The new Avast antivirus will not download updates, and there is an error when trying to install the Opera browser plugin.

What can I do? Please help.

I have Windows XP SP3, with Malwarebytes Anti-malware, Spyware Blaster, and Emsisoft Anti-malware. My firewall is PC Tools Firewall Plus.

I downloaded Avast in Safe Mode, FWIW.

You have to get rid off that corrupted AV Whatever it was. Use the appropiate uninstall tool from this page.

http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/

Also I believe that Emsifoft and PC Toll Firewall Plus have some AV modules in them. This can create some incompatibility with Avast!

Thanks for your reply.

I did uninstall Avira, my old antivirus, first, and then downloaded Avast in safe mode.

I tried using the Avast Repair button in Windows Add/Remove Programs, and it ran, but the two problems persist.

What else can I try? Thanks.

After you uninstalled Avira did you use its tool ?

http://www.avira.com/en/download/product/avira-registrycleaner.

Also have the problem with the other two products, PC Tool Firewall and Emsisoft, that have AV modules.

If you do not want to uninstall any of those you can try a fresh install of Avast!, but I do not think it is going to work.

Download and save to your desktop aswclear : http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility

Download and save a fresh copy of Avast!. Be sure to have your lincense handy if running a paid version:

http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_free_antivirus_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_internet_security_setup.exe
http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/avast_pro_antivirus_setup.exe

Use aswclear.exe in safe mode for any Avast! you may have had before and then for v. 7. Reboot after each uninstall.

Reinstall fresh copy of Avast! and reboot.

Well, I’ve done as you instructed: I downloaded the programs, went into Safe Mode, ran the uninstaller several times, each time with a reboot back into Safe Mode.

Now I have a copy of Avast that can update, but the Opera Plugin still does not work.

  1. Does this mean that when I’m using Opera, I have no Avast antivirus protection? Or is this an additional layer of protection?

  2. If it is a basic feature, how can I get a working plugin for that browser?

I use Opera as my primary browser, so I would really like to know if this can be repaired.

Thanks for your help so far.

You mean Webrep for Opera in Browser Protection ?

I do not know why it is not working. I do not use Opera. Have you already try to uninstall and install again ? Now Avast! will protect you completely without that WebRep plugin anyway.

You can wait and see if any other member has an idea why it is not working for you.

Yes, I mean the WebRep in Browser Protection under Additional Protection.

I’ve alreadly uninstalled and reinstalled Avast 4 times since yesterday; I don’t think that resolves the plugin problem.

If it isn’t necessary, I will leave it be. But I would like to know how to fix it.

I meant the plugin. NoT Avast!

Open Avast! > ADDITIONAL PROTETION > Browser protection > BROWSERS > Opera > Install/Uninstall

But that is the problem. When I hit the Install button, I get the message “There was error while installing the Avast browser plugin.” I don’t see any uninstall function.

Avast! has been installed several times and the last clean install gave you the updates you were missing so it could be OPERA. Why don’t you reinstall it again ? Nothing else comes to my mine right now.

Okay. I’ll consider it. Thanks for your help.

Sorry couldn’t help more. Hope someone with Opera can shine a light your direction.
