I just installed Avast for the first time on my laptop, and now when it boots up, I get a blank screen when it tries to start Windows. I am running Windows 7, with all the updates. A quick solution would be appreciated.
- What version of Avast did you install?
- What product of Avast did you install? Free, Pro, AIS?
- What other security software do you currently have or did you have in the past on this machine including:
-
Antivirus (AV)
-
Firewall (FW)
-
Trial versions of AV, FW and other security programs
-
Other security software
-
If they were in the past, how did you remove them (the vendor’s uninstaller’s tool or another way)?
I downloaded Avast this morning, so I assume it was the latest version. I was trying the free version, but considering upgrading to Pro as I use this computer primarily for work.
I had McAffee Security Suite and Malwarebytes on there, but they’ve been uninstalled. I’d been having some issues with McAfee and was looking to use Avast to replace it. (McAfee started giving me trouble about some of the programs I use from work.)
Please run the uninstaller tool for Mc Affee again and reboot your machine: http://singularlabs.com/uninstallers/security-software/
Malwarebytes (MBAM) is fine to have on your machine, and is compatible with Avast. Most of us actually have it on our machines since it works differently than an AV and offers another layer of protection. So I suggest once we fix your problem, that you install it back on your machine.
Let us know how you do after you run the installer I listed above. Thank you.
Still no luck, I’m afraid. I think I’m going to have to use another security software until I can resolve this issue.
There have been a few glitches with v.7.0.1451 that are due to be fixed sometime this week, however I don’t have the details. If you need an AV now and this version is not working for you, you can always uninstall this version using the Avast Uninstaller Tool http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and follow the directions. Make sure you have the download file for v. 7.0.1426 on your HDD before you uninstall. Install the earlier version, reboot, update your virus definitions, register your product.
Or you can submit a mini-dump file to Avast to analyze the issue to see what is causing the problem. Here is additional information on how to invoke a memory dump file: http://support.avast.com/index.php?_m=knowledgebase&_a=viewarticle&kbarticleid=71.
Please, zip and upload the C:\Windows\Memory.dmp file to this anonymous ftp server and name it uniquely giving us the name of the file in this thread: ftp.avast.com/incoming. Avast will analyze it and respond back to you in this thread.
