Hi all! I like many others were not too happy about AVG 8, (I tried it and found it really slowed things down and tried to download the entire Internet so went back to 7.5) but it seems that all AV software seems to be going that way, trying to be all in ones. I just need a simple e-mail scanner and/or resident shield. I use Firefox and TB and always run as a limited user when browsing/e-mail so ‘touchwood’ but I have not had any serious problems since a couple of years and feel I really do not need additional AS in the package. My Sygate tells me all as far as Internet access is concerned so I feel my PC is quite clean. Outlook is installed mostly as a calendar and contacts app to sync/backup with the Nokia.
I had heard good things about Avast - and its user configurable options - and this forum seems really much better than the ‘rigid’ (to put it mildly) one at AVG. So I wish to change from AVG to Avast.
I request help on configuring Avast when I first install it, after uninstalling AVG. What are the options that are essential? e.g. I am quite sure I will not bother with the webshield. Can I uncheck the AS as well? If I do so, can I re-enable it without going through uninstall/install? Then I can try the performance hit either way and decide.
Just as an opinion, if you can afford the resource usage, I would use all of the services including the webshield. Avast is the only free AV that is as comprehensive as it is (compared to AVG, AntiVir and some others.)
Others on here can tell you more about configurability than I can.
Ok. Thanks. I guess best way is to try it out and see. But are the configuration options available after install? Then I need not bother too much and will enable everything and if I find say browsing slowing down, will disable webshield.
Well, I have installed Avast and all for now seems working fine. It found some viruses in some old files, not too sure whether they are false positives or not, but not being useful in any case, have moved them to the chest.
However what would be the meaning of these errors/warnings in the log file?
‘28/07/2008 12:14:05 SYSTEM 308 AAVM - scanning error: x_AavmCheckFileDirectEx: avfilesScanReal of \PC3\xxxxx Docs\TB15\Profiles\nblgiuac.default\prefs.js failed, 00000005.
and
28/07/2008 12:14:05 SYSTEM 308 AAVM - scanning warning: x_AavmCheckFileDirectEx [UNI]: \PC3\xxxxxxx Docs\TB15\Profiles\nblgiuac.default\prefs.js (\PC3\xxxxxxx Docs\TB15\Profiles\nblgiuac.default\prefs.js) returning error, 00000005.’
The above are only one of several entries in the log file, all pertaining to this action for the several files in the profile. I was backing up my TB profile to another PC on my home LAN, prior to scanning / checking e-mail on TB after installing Avast.

Your can check the file by submitting the file to Virus Total
Somehow I am not able to send the file. It states 0 bytes received. Perhaps Avast still blocking the upload through webshield or resident shield since, after extraction from virus chest, a pop-up indicates virus.
Yes, I had to disable avast! before I could send the file. Surprising results: Only avast!, Antivir, GData and Webwasher gateway showed a virus (the same one). All others, including AVG, Symantec, etc. gave no virus.
