New user of Avast Home 4.7

Hi,

I’m a new user of Avast Home 4.7 on a PC built by a local shop for me very recently. Avast was installed by them. I have activated it now so have the 14 or so months of registration time.

When the PC connects to the internet first time in the day, there is a green box that appears from the system tray telling me there is a new version available for download. Is this a later version of the free home edition or does it sneakily download the Pro edition! The version in the “about” box indicates 4.7.1043.

Also how do I know when the PC has received the latest virus database (which is set to automatically update). The Program update is set to ask when updates are available, which presumably explains the green box.

Thanks

Hello rob24 .
Welcome.

Latest is 4.7.1098.
You can set, if you want, to receive both program and virus database automatically and set the update period as well. For home version, the shortest one is 120 minutes as far I remember. You can check avast logs to see if avast is updating or receive an informative panel in your computer too (see Update (Basic) > Details for more).

Avast! isn’t sneaky. ;D The program update will be the correct edition.

You are correct regarding the green box; as Tech said, you can set avast! to notify you with a similar “sliding box” when an automatic update has occurred, if you would like.

Thanks guys.
The program is set to show a sliding box for updates and I’ve now turned on the system tray icon. I guess that will show when updates of some kind are occuring. Does the sliding window only show when the program is updated and not the virus databases, only I haven’t updated the prog and neither seen indication of database updates with a sliding box.

Program updates are set to Ask (by default) as unlike VPS updates which are set to Auto, because the program updates are larger you wouldn’t want it starting when you were busy.

The VPS updates may also require that you have at least a certain version of the program and 4.7.1043 is relatively old, so you should allow it to update the program. That may also resolve any VPS update issue.

The sliding box shows to notify when virus database updates are available, or after automatic virus database updates, if you have selected that option. If you are away from your computer when the notification appears, however, the box may have disappeared by the time you return. Audible notification is also possible–a relatively pleasant voice announcing, “Virus database has been updated,” for automatic VPS updates.

Thanks again again!
I have updated the program and indeed there is now an audible message just like you describe, t l s. And the system tray icon while it updates. I didn’t really like Avast when I first had it but - yeh - its OK isn’t it!
