newbie question

I’ve done a search, but can’t find an answer.
I sometimes notice an avast folder and a .dat file in windows\temp. I think this happens after an update?
Anyway, is it safe to delete these? I use ccleaner with the 48 hour option (clean windows\temp files older than 48 hours).

Thank you.

avast4 is a temp folder used to unpack files to scan the contents of archive files, once the scan is complete entries are normally removed.

So if the file isn’t in the avast4 sub folder it isn’t one of avast’s files.

Using the 48 hour option shouldn’t be a problem.

Thanks,
The avast folder is empty and the file, with the same creation date is: Perflib_Perfdata_710.dat and when I try to open it, it says it’s in use by another program.

Edit:
The file is not in the avast folder.
The creation date seems to occur every time the computer is is turned on.

I’ve used other free AVs and I know they sometimes utilize the windows\temp so I think this is what is happening. Avast seems to be the least intrusive though.
I’m just curious to know if this is normal for Avast.

Thanks again.

See this link for what it is about, http://www.pcreview.co.uk/forums/showpost

avast provides a good balance between performance and protection with its default settings.

Thanks, DavidR, that was a great explaination, it was exactly it.
You are right about avast, that’s why I’ll continue to use it.

Thanks much.

Your welcome.
