I ran Avast today, and after doing full system scan, i can no longer connect to the internet on my desktop computer. I have service since my son is getting service through his laptop. I have tried connecting directly from modem to desktop, still no connection. I am running on windows xp home edition service pack 3. I’d appreciate any help. I’ve been at this for 5 + hours.
Have (or did) you another Anti-Virus installed in this system, if so what was it and how did you get rid of it ?
What is your firewall ?
Does it allow avastSvc.exe internet access ?
- If it does delete the entry for it and reconnect to the internet, this should force the firewall to ask permission again.
As a temporary work around until you find the cause, you could stop the Web Shield.
had windows security essentials. disabled windows firewall. still can’t connect
sorry microsoft security essentials. i had an earlier version of avast some years ago. i removed essentials in add/remove programs
The XP firewall shouldn’t be an issue as it has ZERO outbound protection, so I would suggest you enable it again. Ideally you need a third party firewall that provides outbound protection.
It would be advisable to do a clean install of avast:
-
Download the latest version of avast, 6.0.1289 http://files.avast.com/iavs5x/setup_av_free.exe (assumes you are using avast free version) and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again (if you didn’t save your last download). Use that when you reinstall.
-
Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, aswClear.exe find it here and save it to your HDD (it has uninstall tools for all avast versions).
-
- Now uninstall avast! (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility from safe mode, first for 5.x (or whichever version you had) if previously installed and then for 6.0, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest version, reboot.
Please go to Control Panel → System → Advanced system settings → Advanced tab → Environment Variables button and in the “System variables” section, check the content of the TEMP variable.
Does the path exist? And is there some free space on that drive?
Thanks

aughtone you probably should also run the MSE removal tool to clear out any leftovers http://thewebatom.net/uninstallers/security-software/ 23b in the list.
You can try to repair the network connection
Norton Power Eraser:http://security.symantec.com/nbrt/npe.aspx?
That will not help with the OP’s problem and please stop posting pointless posts.
