 Hi Oz :

You are going to have to give more info than that to get
help . When posting in a forum asking for help, ALWAYS
mention the name of your Operating System; if it is
Win XP, also state if XP SP1, XP SP2, etc .
What other security program(s) do you have on your
  computer ?
Have you been "battling" malware ( viruses, spyware,
trojans, worms, etc ) recently; if yes, be specific as
  possible !?
What "setting" of the virus scan did you run ?

Aside from what Spiritsongs asks.
What was the virus name, what was the file name, where was it found example (C:\windows\system32\infected-file-name.xxx) ?

The only thing that I recollect recently that may have an impact on Internet connections is NEWDOTNET, check out this topic http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=21608.0, is that familiar.

If you have XP SP2, try - netsh winsock reset - this may be enough to fix the issue referred to in the above link.

cool. this helps a lot. i will get all the info i can & post back.
thanks

Win XP Media Center Edition
SP1 or SP2? don’t know. i have never installed a service pack. but i did just got this computer recently. less than a month ago.

avast 4.7 home edition

ZoneAlarm Antivirus
can’t find a version #. downloaded & installed less than a month ago so i assume it is the latest version. i do not use the antivirus features. firewall & OS firewall only.

yes, i was battling malware. just pop-up stuff. programs opening both IE & firefox & displaying banners.

i have always had the on-access scanner on avast 4.7 completely turned off because i cannot access the internet while it is running.

so because of the pop-ups i went to start Menu/Program Files/avast! Antivirus/avast! Antivirus & the memory test fired up & when that was done the scan just stared. it then rebooted & scanned some more.

while it was scanning after the reboot i was paying attention (out of curiosity) to the names of the files being deleted. at times it was going too fast to read but of the ones i saw they were all spyware, ad-ware & [TRJ]. at first i chose the option yes to all. i defiantly recognized some of the files names. they were processes that i tried to end in task manager but was always denied. but DavidR is right after a while it asked me again whether or not i wanted to deleted certain files because they were in C:\windows\system32*. i chose yes to all. this is actually where it went a little too fast for me to read. but the ones i read were again labeled spyware, ad-ware & [TRJ].

now when i go to Start Menu/Program Files/avast! Antivirus/avast! Antivirus & skip the memory test a car CD player looking interface pops up & it states that the last date of scan has not been done yet. which i don’t understand.

i have tried every program i have to access the internet but none work.
Start Menu/Connect to…/Show All Connections states that i little or no connectivity.
also when my computer starts up i get an error message
RUNDLL
Error Loading: C:/PROGRA~1/NEWDOT~1/NEWDOT~2.DLL
The specified module could not be found.

it seems that this is identical to the topic DavidR suggested i read. i read it but am still a little lost. is this http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm what i need?

ya know as i read DavidR’s suggested topic & some of the links it scares the shit out of me & i only read page 1 of the topic.

thanks guys

I’m not sure if there have been any Service Packs for XP Media Center, just ensure that you periodically check windows update.

  • Battling malware: If you haven’t already got this software (freeware), download, install, update and run it.
  1. Ad-Aware
  2. Spybot Search and Destroy
  3. Spywareblaster Don’t install this until you are clean.
  4. Ewido Security Suite If using winXP, it should probably work with XP media center.
  • Deletion is never a good first option, move to the chest is the best option, from here they can do no harm and they can be recovered/restored if required.

  • The CD player is a Skin (which you can change) for the Simple User Interface to run on-demand scans, different from the resident on-access scans done as a file is opened, etc. So all this is telling you is that you haven’t done a full on-demand scan, in theory you shouldn’t need to do this, but if you have had a period of time before you had avast there might be something that hasn’t been scanned by avast. I suggest a browse of the avast help file to help you get the best out of avast anti-virus.

  • The error message does indicate you had the newdotnet malware, you should only need to use the lspfix if the Run command ‘netsh winsock reset’ without the quotes didn’t work. From the Windows Start button, Run (or press the windows key + r), type, netsh winsock reset and press enter.

  • Better to be frightened than live in ignorance, there are some nasty people out there and you require protection. I also suggest a read of the information in the DropMyRights link in my signature.
Do you have a firewall and if so what ?

 Hi Oz :

You can find the "name" of your "Operating System" by
going to your "Control Panel", left-clicking "System" &
hopefully the "General" menu will appear !? At the top
should be "System" with lines of info under it; what do
 those lines say ?
For some reason, it sounds like you got Zone Alarm's
"Internet Security Suite" ; not a wise decision. Even though
you say you "disabled" its antivirus "component", it will
"conflict" with Avast, causing unnecessary problems. There
have been many compliants on many forums about ZA's
"new" version 6.5 causing problems .
To restore your internet connection, using "LSPFix" is a
secondary option. Since you PROBABLY have Win XP SP2
as your "Operating System", your 1st choice should be to
try : clicking "Run", type "cmd", click "OK", type "netsh
winsock reset" & go from there. DavidR "instructions" left
 out 2 key steps.
What you have posted here indicates you have serious
SPYWARE problems; what antiSPYWARE program(s) do
you have, if any ? DavidR's suggestion of Ad-Aware &
Ewido would be a good start .

‘netsh winsock reset’ worked. i am back online.
sahweet.
still getting pop-ups though.

question, do i install all of these?

  1. Ad-Aware
  2. Spybot Search and Destroy
  3. Spywareblaster
  4. Ewido Security Suite
and if yes i take it to install & run 1,2 & 4 then install & run 3.
    am i right?

it is official i am running Win XP media center edition SP2.

i do not have ZoneAlarm internet security suite, i have ZoneAlarm antivirus but i take it that i need a different firewall anyway. any suggestions?

thank you so much. you two have been more than helpful. i can’t begin to tell ya’ll how much stress you saved me from. i also promise to do my homework.

it’s kinda funny in a really sick twisted way but about half of the pop-ups are telling me that my computer is at risk & that i need to follow the links & download a security program.

thanks agian
oz

Yes install all of them.

Item 3. SpywareBlaster shouldn’t be run unless your system is clean, not simply after running 1,2,4, you should also run another avast scan and your system shouldn’t be showing any symptomes, like strange pop-upd, homepage hijacked to different location, etc. After all that it should be fine to install, update, run, item 3.

Having two resident anti-virus solutions can cause conflict, especially if a virus is detected as both will fight for control, which could lock your system. Yes you need a firewall that provides outbound protection.

Any malware that manages to get past your defences will have free reign to connect to the internet to either download more of the same, pass your personal data (user names, passwords, keylogger retrieved data, etc.) or open a backdoor to your computer, so outbound protection is essential.

 Hi Oz :

Since you say you are getting spyware, adware, trojans
and possibly more, I think you would be helped best on
an antiSPYWARE forum. There are very good Experts on
the forums at www.landzdown.com . Those popups are
trying to convince you to install their rogue/suspect
program(s) that only put more spyware on your computer.
Ironically, your computer is at risk, but their "solution"
will only make it worse !
