Simple wireless home network. Laptop connected to Wanadoo Broadband and has Sygate Personal Firewall and Avast 4.6 Home Edition, build 4.6.603. Desktop connects to internet through laptop and has no Firewall but runs Avast as detailed above.
All was fine until I installed this current new version of Avast on Desktop. Now it will not connect to internet unless I terminate Web Shield, after which I have no trouble at all. No trouble connecting on the laptop with all providers running.
Both machines running XP Pro. Any thoughts please?
Installed latest build today on laptop only. Now getting exactly the same problem there and have to stop Web Shield in order to get internet access. Very strange!
With Avast, you have to allow ashWebSv.exe to ‘Act as Client’ in application rules.
It should be a default setting, so really cannot understand why your connection is not working, unless you have blocked it?
You can restrict it to port 80 tcp, though.
No - didn’t know there was a Web Shield update and it’s not obvious to me where I download it. Pathetic, I know, but vcan you point me to it please?

I haven’t changed any settings at all. I’ve always simply downloaded whatever updates there are and let Avast do it’s own thing, which it has done perfectly 'till now. How do I do what you mention please?
Go to ‘Applications’ and check that the entry ‘avast! Web Scanner…’ is not blocked.
With Sygate you can always check also the traffic log and see if something is not blocked there.
I am using build 5.5 2710, so I cannot tell if something is wrong, I doubt not so, with the latest version you might have.
Thanks Eddy - that worked beautifully. Sorry I didn’t understand your link earlier. I’ll send the zip through to my desktop later and do the same again with that.
