I had BitDefender Internet Security 2009 in late 2010 and I switched to Avast AntiVirus and Windows Firewall. I could not believe how much faster my computer shut down and started. It was like night and day. It was wonderful!
Then I decided I wanted to go with Avast Internet Security. I will have to say that since going this route my computer seems to take a very long time to shut down and reboot. I don’t normally shut my computer down; normally restart at least once a day. I was just wondering if there is something I’m unaware of that I could change which would take some time off the reboot process. I didn’t think Avast was supposed to be that hard on system resources. I do have additional 2MG RAM that I just ordered, which will bring me up to 4, so don’t know if that will make a difference or not.
too many security software on your system … some will argue that MBAM + Avast is okay, or SAS + Avast is okay… but hey you got them all and this generates conflicts. And no Avast doesn’t need an extra 2GB of RAM ;D … if you can add them do it, this will improve your system performance anyway and Avast drivers may start faster, again not because they need the extra RAM, but because you have too much stuff loading with Windows. Not mentioning that most of it is useless when you got avast… with the exception of mbam may be.
The only thing that loads with Windows is Avast, as far as security goes. None of the other programs run at startup or in the background. I start MBAM and Super once every week to 10 days and run full scans. Same with the other programs. They are only open and run on demand. And I had all these other programs when I was running Avast AntiVirus and Windows Firewall too.
I wasn’t indicating that I thought Avast needed an extra 2G of RAM. I just mentioned that I had purchased and that perhaps that would make a difference. According to your answer, it will make a bit of difference.
I’m not sure at all that non-resident programs don’t load any driver when Windows boots. SAS does, even in its free and non-resident version. The fact that you don’t see the app running doesn’t mean that there’s no corresponding Windows service running.
@ Nikilet
Although unrelated, firefox is now on 3.6.15, so you should ensure it is up to date (or update your signature).
I MBAM and SAS are the free versions, then there shouldn’t be an issue as they are on-demand scanners. SAS will load a driver, if you elect to have it place an entry in the right click menu to scan files using right click menu. Otherwise I don’t think it will load a driver.
I don’t think you need a specific history killer application, why not have firefox clear your history when you close it.
Yes, my Firefox is up to date. And yes, both MBAM and SAS are the free versions. I purchased History Killer, but I do not have it run at startup, and lots of times I forget to start it. I’m not that impressed with it so it wouldn’t hurt my feelings to uninstall it if you think it would help with boot time.
SAS is not on my right click menu. But MBAM is. Is there a way to remove it from the context menu so that a driver doesn’t load?
If you want to see which drivers are loaded you can use free “DriverView” by Nirsoft to see all the drivers that are loaded plus a lot of stuff about each driver. My Desktops are currently loading about 150 drivers give or take depending on what programs I am running.
I don’t think it will help with start times if it isn’t running on startup, my comment was based on is it really needed when most browser will have settings to clear your browsing history when you close them.
See image for the MBAM right click context menu option, uncheck it.
Nesivos: Thank you for the link to DriverView. I think I will download and take a look.
YoKenny: I’m not ready to tackle IE9 at this point, and IE 8 has got a critical vulnerability that has not been addressed in a long while. I’ve always used IE, and it wasn’t until just a few months ago I switched to Firefox. I don’t know of any real problems with Firefox. Do you think that could be causing my boot times to be slow?
I got rid of Firefox and it soved all my problems on XP and Vista when I had it and now with Windows 7 I prefer IE9.

… but don’t worry, I won’t inflict on you the pain to elaborate about that … would be off topic here anyway, but I had to react 8) … that’s it I’m gone :-X
I won’t use Soluto at this point. I had some problems with it, and several others had the same problem. It appears I finally managed to get a clean uninstall of it today and I’m leaving well enough alone.
