What payment method did you use, and who did you pay your previous subscription to?
In my case, I paid via PayPal through Digital River, which has been in bankruptcy since my last renewal; and indeed, I was unable to change my payment method via my Avast account using the procedure outlined (Avast didn’t even display any payment methods, so it was impossible to change it 
).
Today (5 days before renewal), I went via the Avast UI and the renewal options on offer (at a reduced price) and was able to renew via PayPal (Avast Software s.r.o… and no longer DR).
Now the PayPal payment method does appear in my Avast account, though it’s still impossible to change it; I think this is only possible with credit card payments.
NB: This payment method was also offered to me for my renewal via the interface.
However – if any Avast support staff are reading this – I did encounter a problem confirming my payment when I was redirected to PayPal (I tried yesterday and today), with a message telling me that Avast was experiencing an issue and to try again later.
It seems, in the end, that this was because the email address on my Avast account was different from the one on my PayPal account, as as soon as I updated my Avast account with my PayPal email address, it worked first time.
