After selecting the boot time scan, I selected the restart prompt. My computer then restarted but no scan took place, and while the computer can be turned off and on it isn’t sending any signal to my monitor. I have tried unplugging and plugging back in every wire, checked power, restarted several times but I’m unsure of what else I can do.
When you first turn your computer on, do you hear a single beep as you normally do? Why were you running a boot-time scan? Did Avast! tell you to do so?
Yes, there is the usual single beep. Avast did not instruct me too, I ran it only because I hadn’t restarted my computer in a while and I figured why not throw in q scan while I’m at it
The fact that your system runs thru BIOS and beeps once (this is normal behavior) is a good sign. Otherwise, you would get what are known as beep codes (go to manufacturer’s web site for exact make and model to see what these are) and depending on the beep code(s) heard, you can diagnose what hardware is failing the BIOS test.
Things to try:
[ol]- Remove the monitor and try a known good monitor in place.
- Change the monitor cable for a known good one.
- Open the case (assuming desktop, not specified here) and disconnect all peripheral drives (CD/DVD drive(s), hard drive(s) and attempt to start your system. What do you see? Does the monitor now show a visual?[/ol]
Depending what the results are, further troubleshooting may be required.
Suggest not running an Avast! boot-time scan in the future as deeper scan options are provided, and scan results often are confusing to less than advanced users. If Avast! tells you to, then it is because a malware infection was detected, then that option is ok to run. Otherwise, no.
