First post, and I’m not a computer genius, so this could be a little rough. Please forgive any oddities you find.
For the past however many days I’ve not been able to update. I never paid much attention to when the updates happened - I just let Avast do what it does. Because of the failed attempts I have put updates on manual for the moment.
I made a screen cap of the first error and will attach it below. The second error is much the same but offers the option of debugging which does diddly. Before I post that, I should tell you that I have tried to download another AV product temporarily but it conflicted so I deleted it. About an hour ago, I also tried to drop in a free version of Avast onto my F drive (rather than C drive were Avast currently resides), thinking that I could use it for virus scans until this other issue is settled. Dorky, right? That didn’t work and just now I did a system restore because it overtook my current version of Avast, and so I had to insert my license and get it running again. I’m down to one license option now so uninstalling and reinstalling is not on the menu. Embarrassing to say, but I just can’t afford that.
I’ve tried the fixes offered in the forum and they have failed. (I appreciate that people here did what they could to help fellow users out though.) So…does anyone here have any ideas what I can do with this, or when there will be a fix? Any inside info? Surely they must realize that there is a problem by now - is anyone coming forward with any answers?
Sadly, this doesn’t inspire me to want to stick with Avast past the coverage I (maybe, kind of) have now.
I’m using XP Home, SP3 Build 2600. Windows\system32. I’m not sure if that’s the same as 32 bit or 64 bit.
Avast Internet Security
7.0.1466 is indeed the lasts to install.
I have MalwareBytes which I use occasionally, as well as SuperAntiSpyware, also an occasional usage. They have never been an issue in the past so I’m not thinking too much about them at present. I have no other security or scanning programs.
I tried the manual download of the vpsupd file and it didn’t work. I then went back, assuming that perhaps I should have used the other option (vpsupd4) but that was a bust as well.
There was another fix offered on the forum. I don’t recall exactly what it was now, but it gave me an error code because again, that file was designed for another problem. I’ve looked at so many threads and searched online so many times for answers that I wouldn’t be able to tell you what thread to look for.
I tried the “repair” function within Avast itself, which didn’t help.
The most recent was the download of Avast5 from the website, which I installed on F drive. During the install it froze and I lost my internet connection. I wasn’t able to get it to connect again, so I tried to cancel my way out of the install but it continued in spite of that, after the freeze. At that point my original Avast was pooched and I had to do a system restore to a few hours prior. After that, with Avast being unfortunately stripped of license data, I had to use license #2 to activate the program again. Everything program-wise was as it had been before the install and subsequent system restore, except for the license part. Oh - I did have to change my firewall setting to high. That was the only issue.
All this lead me here…back to see if there was any news. I can’t be the only one having this issue. Ugh. It’s so frustrating, and I’m annoyed that I paid for the upgrade a couple months ago and it’s not working as it should.
And don’t worry: You don’t loose a license when you install AIS again! For example: When you have 3 licences you can install it on 3 different PCs at one time.
While downloading last night (well, actually early this morning) I got an email message from tech support in response to my request for help. They wanted to review the log files for avast so I forwarded that, and thus far I’ve heard nothing back. Depending on who works on it, the difficulty and whatnot, it could take a while…but I’m going to give it a couple more hours and then go forward with the suggestions you made. I’m not content to let things go for weeks like this. It’s been too long already.
I will definitely let you know how all of this goes. If I get anything back from tech support that’s useful I will post it here also, just in case it can be useful to someone else.
Okay. I did the safe mode thing, installed from scratch, and had zero internet connection. Nothing I did worked. I didn’t even have my back up dial-up service. That wouldn’t connect.
So I went back to safe mode and did a system restore to a few days back to avoid all the changes that have happened with this whole thing.
Now, I’m back online which is nice, but avast is dead. It won’t function, it won’t accept my license, I have zero protection.
Right now I’m to the point of not even wanting to continue. What I did here was useless and now it’s even worse than it was without just the updates. Now I’ve got nothing that works. I lost my licenses on this crap and I’m now stuck.
Tech support hasn’t gotten back to me so I’m going to assume that it’s either a huge issue and they don’t know how to fix it.
