Why are you trying to install a old version of avast?
What OS/SP?
Any other security software installed?

This, became a moot post.

In the process of attempting to figure this out, I triggered windows driver protection scheme, and the machine would not boot to desktop.

When I disabled the avast drivers, (renamed the file extensions), machine still did not get to desktop, windows insisted on reinstalling everything back to factory specs.

Now, 182 window updates later, I find the avast icon in my notification window, with a nice red X in the icon, (because it can’t load the drivers, (gee, I wonder why ;D )), and information that I’m avast version 8.0.1506

Currently my OS is registering Windows 2000, SP4.3

How would I manually update my virus definations?

This is still an issue for me.

If it is still a problem, are you still using the same avast version, there have been recent program updates ?

Manual update of Virus Definitions (VPS) - avast! Virus Definitions Update - Manual Download VPS Update, ensure you download the correct version avast! VPS update for version 2014 to 2015 (virus definitions, vpsupd.exe, approx 66.5 MB). - Save the file to your hard disk, locate where you saved it and double click it and that should carry out the virus definitions update.

Can’t install anything except Avast 8 on this machine, latest installer bails on me.

The virus update for 8 claims that my current definitions are up to date, bogus error message from the installer, on my other machine, same Avast 8 on it, they are at 3/19/2015, on this machine, they are at 1/19/2015.

Apparently, I’ve not enough memory in this machine to execute the commands correctly for the updates.

So, different tack, seeing as the definitions ARE up to date on my other machine, how do I transfer them over to this one?

Hi!

If you have still Win2000 SP4 on your machine, W2k will only accept ‘avast 8.0.1497’ and no newer versions.
So I would ask you to do a clean install with ‘aswclear’ and download ‘8.0.1497’ before. Install this version, that runs on W2k. After that, you’ll get the definitions, too.

Hi,

I have the same problem since 5/6/2015 with Avast Pro 8.0.1506 running on W2K SP4.
The latest installed VPS is 150506-3, but the update process fails now with 150519-0.

What is going wrong now with automatic VPS updating, running out of support ?

You should still be able to receive the vps updates.
If it doesn’t work, see if a repair of avast is solving it.
If that doesn’t solve it, perform a clean installation of avast.

  1. Not sure with ‘8.0.1506’. The highest avast, which works on W2k
    is ‘8.0.1497’! So a repair will change nothing!
  2. Naturally with ‘8.0.1497’!
