I can’t uninstall my Free Avast Software. I tried to use the Control Panel, but it pops up with “A setiface error has occurred: 2”
I would like to uninstall this software as it has been giving me loads of problems. Also, how do I get onto normal sites? When I try to go on yahoo.com or google.com, for example, I’m met with this page that says that the site is dangerous, and if I click anything, it redirects me to the avast! home page. Like seriously? The only website that’ll work is gmail, and even then, I’m getting pop-ups every minute about “_____ is dangerous” or something like that. Honestly, this is freaking me out, with 5 million pop-ups a day, and the inability to uninstall this…
Help?
Note: I’m using another computer to post this up, because Avast made the other go haywire.
Is there anyway I can permanently delete this program?
First, you may want to modify your first post and delete your email so spammers don’t harvest it.
Second, you can download the Avast Uninstall Utility tool http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility and save it to your HDD.
Next, disconnect from the Internet at this time.
Boot into Safe Mode (hit F8 repeatedly) and run the Avast Uninstall Tool. Reboot.
If you are being redirected to other sites and your machine is acting strange, this is a red flag for possible malware. It may not be that Avast is the problem, but that you have malware. Have you done any scans with Avast or on-demand scanners like MBAM to see if you are infected?
Check your computer for malware with Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware (MBAM).
· Download freehttp://www.malwarebytes.org/ (the blue button) for an on-demand scanner.
· Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
· After install, click update so you have latest database before scanning.
· Under Settings:
o General: Automatically Save File After Scan Completes is checked off
o Scanner Settings: Check all boxes
o Updater: Download and install update if available is checked off
· Once the program has loaded, select “Perform FULL Scan”, then click Scan.
· The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
· When the disinfection scan is complete, a log will appear in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart. (See Extra Note).
· Click the “remove selected” button to quarantine anything found. You will find the infection details under the Quarantine tab.
· The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
· Copy & Paste the entire report in your next reply.
Next, do an Avast Quick scan and a boot-time scan and report the results in the post after your MBAM log post since this will take longer.
Hmm…I can’t even go to that website. It says, “Visiting this site may harm your computer.”
Is there a way to just completely wipe off everything on my computer? I can’t even visit the websites to download stuff.
OK…go off the Internet and just do the Avast scanning – Quick and a boot time scan and report back. If anything comes up infected, put it in the Virus Chest.
Are you on a network? If so, disconnect this machine from the network as well and do not share a USB drive with any other machine or sync a phone with it until we know it is clean.
I’m on a different computer.
The quick scan was negative. 0 threats were detected. I’m starting the boot scan now. And this whole time, I’ve still been getting pop-ups on my other computer.
EDIT: The Boot-time scan is either incredibly fast, or it isn’t working on my computer, so I’m doing a Full-system scan.
What is your OS, 32 or 64-bit? What version of Avast do you have? This could be why you can’t do a boot-scan. Either way, report back.
Let’s call the possibly infected machine #1, and the other machine you have #2:
Another option for installing MBAM onto machine #1 is to use a USB that we can later disinfect if needed. Download and update MBAM as instructed from my prior post on the USB from machine #2, then install it via the USB onto machine #1. Stay off-line while on machine #1. Run the MBAM scan. Remember to quarantine any infections. Then report back your findings…if possible from machine #1 by cut and paste, then get off-line. Do not reinsert the USB back into machine #2. Thank you.
