Novice needs help please

Could someone please help a one time pretty proficient PC person whose abilities are impaired due to heavy duty cancer+ drugs. This is so hard, my specialty was troubleshooting and now here I am and to put it right out there “I just don’t get it” ???

I have a PC with Windows XP, on AOL, currently using their safety and security program to monitor all anti virus, spyware,ad ware, firewall’s,etc.
I have a PC, on broadband, etc., I loved avast! and if it were not for the fact that I receive this package security free with my ISP I would choose avast! I did try using both of them for several months as I hated to uninstall avast but found out I had to choose or problems would eventually happen. I uninstalled avast from my PC and all was fine for the last four months, last week my anti virus program, courtesy of AOL/McAfee decided to stop scanning only the anti virus part saying that I have multiple anti virus programs and to uninstall avast!.
I am totally at a loss since I did uninstall avast! correctly according to avast! uninstall instructions. I try to search everywhere on my hard drive for avast file or folders and it comes up zip every time. I even went through my directory one folder at a time to make sure I was not missing something.
I contacted AOL who told me to uninstall their anti virus prog and then reinstall it. However no change it still says I have avast on my computer. I again called tech support at AOL who decided to throw the ball in your court in the nicest way however and says that sometimes this occurs and that avast! will be able to help me to clear all files (even though I can’t find them).,that my pc is detecting.
I usually try to resolve things myself which is a great learning experience however it plays hell with time and so I am throwing in the towel and asking you, how to resolve this problem? I thought the logical solution was to uninstall both the anti virus part of AOL and then reinstall avast! and uninstall it again and then reinstall AOL anti virus and see if this works but as I said I waste a lot of time always trying to fix it myself (and as I admitted above I am not at my best using my brain) I have already lost a week spending a couple hours a day and it remains the same status.
Can you please assist me in resolving this issue, I would be ever so appreciative?
I hope I provided enough information so you may provide me with some options and throw some magic my direction. Thank you ever so much for your time and attention. Again thank you, Pamela Gordon.
ps this may sound a bit eccentric but I just purchased a new pc where I can run my broadband program MSN and not install aol so I can install avast! I am just so impressed with program so thanks for your time and excuse my inept aptitude. 8)

avast has an uninstaller which will clear any leftover registry entries that might be missed by MS uninstaller.
This is probably what is upsetting the other programs you are trying to install.

You can search here on the board for uninstaller or go to the website of Avast! and locate it there.
good luck

Welcome to the forums, Pamela.

Sorry to hear about your health problems. I am a bit confused. Do you have 2 different computers? The problem you are having is most likely due to AOL/McAfee detecting registry entries for avast that may not have been deleted when you uninstalled avast. Avast has an uninstall utility available on their website that may help you and it can be found at this link:

http://www.avast.com/eng/avast-uninstall-utility.html

Otherwise, you may have to edit the registry for avast entries. If I remember correctly, Tech once posted those entries in this forum. Maybe a search of the forum will find that post.

Edit:

You can read the post by Tech I mentioned above at this link below.

I hope this will help you.

 Hi Pamela :

That "Free" AOL "security package", which includes their
not-needed "safety & security monitor" is trying to make
you depended on them. We called AOL "AOLHell" around
here. Should "disable" all those AOL "Services" & if
 necessary, switch to another Internet Service provider;
there are many GOOD & Cheaper ones available, which
can be found by going to www.freedomlist.com .
There are lots of Good, some of them FREE, antiSPYWARE
programs available; see the info at :
 http://rcip.com/mitch/NewbieOldieUpdated.html .

And lastly, if NOT the most important, there is a non-toxic
method to treat your cancer, either solely or in conjunction
of your current medical treatment. It is called "IV Vit C" ;
it is practised by a small number of nutrition-oriented
doctors, who's website is www.acam.org . There is a book
on the subject, written by medical doctor Thomas E Levy,
called "Vitamin C, Infectious Diseases, and Toxins : Curing the Incurable". One
of the leading doctors of this therapy is Hugh Riordan, who
has a clinic in Wichita & a website at www.brightspot.org .

Thanks so much for responding to me. I did try the uninstaller from avast and then reinstalled all my software again only to find that the avast is still showing up as a multiple virus.

Troubleshooting used to be my forte and this has me absolutely overwhelmed.

I tried all the results and suggestions that all of you so graciously provided but obviously I must not be giving you a key piece of info that my problem is basing itself on.

Why do I keep AOL? I have been with it forever in like 1994 or something, I get all the bennies and pay only $7.95 a month, however they are not my main ISP. I am on Broadband through MSN as my main provider. I just hesitate to loose all my favorites if I were to remove aol from my PC. AND the biggest reason is as much of a problem I am having with this relatively mild problem all of you are helping me with now can you imagine my deleting aol and then having to learn and what to use in my defense for the antivirus, spyware, adware and firewalls. Not to insult my own intelligence but some days my brain is in such a state that my brain probably only utilizes .000023 of it’s capabilities, anyone all kidding aside trying something new is rather frightening when you do not have support, etc.
I appreciate everyone’s help, anymore suggestions I am open totally to try.

And to the individual who gave me information regarding my health thank you so much. I will check those sites out, I have heard of Vit C IV treatment for Cancer, a doctor here in Portland, Martin Milner wrote a book on it that I am currently reading. I don’t believe in coincidences so this must be a good sign to have you mention this.

Thanks to all, I wish I could have responded to each of you separately but it appears I can only post to the last message board. Again, thanks so much to all of you.
Pamela

 Hi Pamela :

Since you have a new PC with MSN Broadband, why don't
you just use it & forget the PC with the AOL as the ISP !?
On that computer, you are talking about AOL's "Security
& Safety Monitor", which is similar to Win XP SP2 "Security
Center"; we have many on this forum asking us why the
Windows "Security Center" does NOT show Avast as
"Active" on their computer. We respond with many things
to try and "fix" the "problem"; my personal conclusion is
that the info coming from the "Security Center" is
unreliable and recommend "disabling it"; more than likely
"disabling" the AOL "version" would probably be wise.

I did a Google "search" for Martin Milner & found he's
medical director of "The Center for Natural Medicine" and
 a "N.D". I looked around :
 www.cancercure.org/dr_milner.htm and the Books portion
of the site has nothing with him as the Author. I did see
a book by Dr Lorraine Day, who I heard in person several
yrs ago & have info from her website.
Looked through the Recommended "clinics" and saw a
familiar name ( James Privitera of Covina, CA ), who is
also listed on www.acam.org site; he used to appear on
"Doctor's Night" on TBN. The ACAM site is looking for N.D.s
to add to their "Naturopathic Doctor Directory"; perhaps
you could inform Dr Milner of this !?

I first heard of IV Vit C in the newsletter of Julian Whitaker
one of America's premier orthomolecular physicians; it
can be viewed at, if you have the Adobe reader program :
 www.drwhitaker.com/issues/pwp_pdf/1105HH.pdf .
"Security Center" does NOT show Avast as "Active" on their computer. We respond with many things to try and "fix" the "problem"; my personal conclusion is that the info coming from the "Security Center" is unreliable and recommend "disabling it"
Sorry Spiritsong but that is not exactly a true statement. We have had some complaints about the security center not recognizing avast! You have recommended disabling it. I know I have not. It (the security center) has reminded me on more than one occasion that I've forgotten to re-enable a portion of avast! I do agree with you on your AOL advice. :) My personal preference is NetZero as a back-up (Dial-up) ISP for the rare occasions when my cable connection goes out. Since NetZero still offers 10 Free hours per month, it's come in handy without costing me anything. :)
