I have similar problem as many people wrote about here. No way to boot my Windows
My Vista 32, regularly serviced (up to the newest SP and fixes) has been installing Windows Update a few days ago (I think it was a regular monthly security fixes pack). It was taking about 2 hours for a file of 600k, so I clicked “cancel”, it said after 5 minutes that installation was successfully cancelled. Computer started working much slower than normally. I was working on it for the next 1-2 days. Then I shut it down (with normal Windows command). Next day at restart it never booted again, in normal mode it says “disk is not bootable, please insert Windows CD”, in safe mode stops after loading aswRvrt.sys.
I have checked it with Kaspersky Rescue Disk 10, AVG Rescue Disk and F-Secure Rescue CD and no malware was detected. I ran BIOS HDD diagnostics and it says “Error Code 000: Read Verification Failed”, otherwise the HDD surface test is successful. I could get my latest files from HDD with Lenovo Rescue & Recovery CD, so my files are safe, but I would like to recover my system, not reinstall my PC!
My computer does not see USB in boot menu, so I made a bootable CD from Vista RC .iso (as some other users were instructed on this forum) and ran automatic Startup Repair, but it did not help (it saw 1 restore point, said it is reverting system to it, but it did not help /change anything).
Hi have you tried a system restore from the recovery console ? If not try that first
There appears to be a problem with a few Vista systems where windows updates breaks the system, sometimes removing Avast will clear it and sometimes not. I have not been able to find any specific circumstance which causes this
If the restore fails then using the fixlixt attached I will remove Avast, again this may not cure the problem
Download the attached fixlist.txt to the same location as FRST
Run FRST as before and press Fix
Try a reboot to normal windows
Thank you. Yes I tried, will try again in a moment - “7/23/2013 3:59:28 AM Install: Windows Update” (it is the only restore point that I see). The only option it gives me is to restore disk C:. Running it now… If not successful at reboot I will run FRST with your fix.
“System Restore completed successfully”, restarted system, took ages, unfortunately still the same problem, no change.
Ran FRST with your fix, unfortunately did not help (does not boot from HDD). Pls find Fixlog of this repair attached. I then ran again FRST, pls find FRST.txt attached as well.
Thank you for trying to help. I appreciate it a lot. I will reinstall from Lenovo recovery disks (unfortunately it installs a plain old system and then I need to install everything step by step again). My data is safe, I have everything in Google Apps /Drive and/or Dropbox. I can access my HDD anyhow and copy to USB when booting from Vista RC CD. Thank you again!
