Hi - My Avast started playing up for some reason (it was getting very slow when I was searching) so have decided to reinstall. I understand that it is not advisable to download and install Avast whilst there is another Antivirus and Firewall running.
Surely, if I go online to download and install Avast without any protection, I am asking for trouble so how can I safely do this???

You don’t say what Avast Program this is ?
You also don’t say what this other antivirus program is ?
You should be able to download the off-line installation for the Avast program you had.
Once you have downloaded it, go off-line. You should then be able to uninstall the other AV and install Avast without intervention from the other program.

The Avast program is Avast Free and also use the Avast browser.
The other Antivirus Program is Comodo.
I’ll give it a go this afternoon and let you know how it went. Hopefully with no problems. I think the Avast Browser is one of the best.

You should not run two antivirus programs together, they will fight each other. Choose one and remove the other fully using their uninstall tool.
