Opening Internet Explorer opens infinate Avast Online Security tabs

Hello, I just recently loaded windows 7 64 bit onto a new hard drive. giving myself Avast was one of the first things I did. The second was trying to download firefox. However when opening internet explorer, An infinate number of tabs with the address “http://aos.avast.com/upgrade/4006” started popping open. Is there a way to stop this without removing avast?

Control Panel>Uninstall a Program>double click “avast”>click “change”>untick “browser protection”>reboot

The “browser protection” isn’t protecting anything anyway. The real protection is in the three resident shields.
The browser protection installs the ill-named “avast online security”.
