interesting thanks. I dropped Opera a few weeks ago, can’t really trust Unite, although I really like the concept. Seeing this10.5 alpha doesn’t even have Unite yet, I’ll skip it and wait for a new build
lol yes I could have done that, but Opera doesn’t interest me very much without Unite. And since I had doubts about security flaws with Unite, I stopped using Opera completely.
I know there were some claims about security problems, but it turned out to be FUD. All of them were either already fixed or were of the type “people can find your IP address”, which applies to any web server.
How do you know what use Unite is anyway? It’s just getting started, and I’m betting that Opera is going to be announcing some huge contracts for Unite, just like they did with widgets.
Some people were complaining that Opera was spending time on widgets, but then it turned out they are making lots and lots of money licensing widgets. And when Opera makes more money they can afford to hire more people to do more work and improve Opera even more.
I think you have lost sight of Opera’s overall strategy. That is, you have no idea what Opera’s strategy is and you are not able to see beyond your own needs.
Opera is just a plain browser by default. Unite, torrents and all that - all disabled and hidden away by default. You won’t even notice them unless you actually activate them and start using them. What’s funny is that Opera is a smaller download and has a snappier UI (and now the fastest browser engine by far) despite having additional features that other browsers don’t.
The one thing I love about Firefox is that you can customize it to exactly the way you want it. I don't see much going on with Opera in that category.
yeah, one thing that bothers me on Unite, is that file transfers, when triggered by the person you gave a link to, are not encrypted. No ssl there and they don’t want to implement it >>>>>>>>>>>>>> eavesdropping’s too easy, at the contrary of LiveMesh or LiveSync…and I don’t like that. Your IP is still protected as the path to your system goes through an Opera proxy, but that’s not enough.
The thing with Unite is that all you need is a browser on the other end, no special file sharing software. And I’m not sure most file sharing software is even encrypted.
This is not a vulnerability in Unite, nor is being able to see someone’s IP address.
I agree it’s not a vulnerability, as it’s wanted that way, but eavesdropping are possible…this said LiveMesh and LiveSync send and receive files “encrypted” in p2p mode. Oh, Skype as well…
