I just installed Verizon DSL which has it’s own anti-virus program & it will not run with another anti-virus program such as AVAST which was highly recommended by my local computer store. Is there a way to run both as a second level of protection? THX!
I think this is not a local antivirus. Your emails are being scanned, nothing more.
If my first statement is right, then you can install avast! locally in your computer to be protected in whole Internet, emails, files, etc.
If this isn’t a local AV solution then no problem, but I would suggest that you speak to Verizon DSL to confirm this if it is to be installed on your computer, I would have thought that there should be a means of uninstalling the Verizon AV.
Having two resident AVs is not a good idea as Verizon points out, rather than provide twice the protection it is likely to cause conflict and possibly leave you unprotected. avast! isn’t really designed to act as an on-demand scanner and would take some stopping to cripple it to use as an on-demand scanner in order for it to work as a back-up.
Thanks for the response. I have disabled Verizon ant-virus program & enabled AVAST & it seems to be working ok. Is that safe or should I just run the Verizon antiivirus program?
Disabling one or the other may not be enough, some anti-virus programs are deeply embedded into the registry and even if disabled can still cause conflict. We recommend only one resident (on-access) scanner be installed.
Personally I know which one I would choose to have installed, that is avast, not just because I feel it is a very configurable, flexible and good anti-virus solution but one of the strong points is the support you can expect through these forums, etc.
We don’t even know which AV Verizon is using (often it is not their own but one used under a license agreement) as its solution? So I can’t say if that is safe or not.
