Outlook Express 6 . Internet Mail Scanner does not scan

Hiya Guys,

I’m a new user to Avast anti-virus. I did some testing with another machine a few weeks ago and I really appreciated his features.

I tried to install it on my other pc(which in my main one), however, although all scanners seems to work just fine, the Internet Mail scanner is just ignoring Outlook Express. After several hours of uptime, no messages as been scanned(All counts are 0)

The scanner version is 4.6-603, which is the latest one I believe. I’m connecting to 3 IMAP servers. In the test configuration I made on my laptop in my first attempt, email scanning was working perfectly without any special configuration. This laptop as been reformated, so I’m not sure with version I used(It was in the 4.6-xxx).

Logs are empty, no error whatsoever. The scanner is active, but not grabbing anything. ???

Any clue?

I’m running Windows XP SP1, with Outlook Express 6

Thanks

Can you check if the avast mail service is running? (ashMaiSv.exe)
It must start manually (not automatic) in the system boot.

Hi,

Yes it is running. I got those 4 services running:

avast! Antivirus
avast! iAVS4 Control Service
avast! Mail Scanner
avast! Web Scanner

I’m surprise to see that no mail is being scanned, and the web scanner is not scanning anything either… Looks like I have two issues… :frowning:

I’m lost ???

I got my old laptop back on his feet with an old ghost image. Avast version running on it is 4.5-561, and the scanner is up and working. I opened my outlook express(which is same version, which connects to same IMAP server, and scanned closed to 80 items in less than a minute.

Maybe I should remove and reinstall to see how it goes. :-\

Click here to test avast! WebShield.
This should bring up a window asking to abort the connection or, at least, the popup message that an infected file was blocked by WebShield.

Another way to see if it’s working is loading a web page from your browser and see if it it shows up on WebShield panel as being the last scanned.

To see if avast! is scanning emails, check one of these points:

  1. Is the avast icon (the special one of email scanning) be shown in the system tray?

  2. Is your email header with the lines X-Antivirus: avast! (VPS 0XXX-X, XX/XX/2005), Inbound message and X-Antivirus-Status: Clean? (Right click the message, choose Properties and Details)

To see the Standard Shield and other protection:

  1. Is the ‘a’ blue icon swirling?

  2. Right click the icon once and see what are the ‘last scanned files’…

  3. Use eicar virus test.

  4. Are clean notes added at the bottom of the email? (Internet Mail provider settings)

Thanks for the great information tech. Now, I can see that the Web Shield is working fine, however the email scanning is failing miserably. :frowning:

The email scanning just doesn’t intercept any email.

If I activate notes to be added to email it’s not done. It’s like if the EmailScanner was active, but couldn’t detect the presence of email activity.

That’s sad, since I got it to work perfectly on another machine. I just don’t know what is different with this one.

Let me know if you think of anything else. Thanks for your help.

With Windows 2k\XP, avast 4.6 has a new mail detection that will work automatically. Please, set up your email account just as avast does not exists. It will detect the pop3/smpt/imap ports and scan your messages. Can you make a try and see if it’s ok? Thanks.

New email detection is automatic and do not require user interaction. Anyway, spam killer applications need manually change email account settings

I cannot get Avast to scan mail in outlook express 6.It just doesn’t scan at all, neither incoming or outgoing mail.I have searched this board and have tried every solution there is and it still doesn’t work.I uninstalled Avast…reinstalled and it DID scan until i updated the program…any suggestions?
Was there some sort of glitch or something that i have overlooked on this board? Thanks in advance…

What is your OS?
What providers are you using for email, it should be the Internet Mail provider and not Outlook/Exchange?
What firewall are you using?
Does it allow ashMaiSv.exe access to the internet?
What error messages are you getting?

Thanks for any help offered but i just realized it is my firewall causing the problems afterall… :-[

I should have not allowed ashmaisv.exe to connect, should you?
If you post the problem, please, post what did you do for solve it, this helps the others and help us to measure the effectiveness of our help 8)

That it what I thought, which one are you using?
