Outlook unable to send mails with HTML or RTF

Hi,

during the recent updates, my Outlook started acting strangely.
For the sent mails that contains HTML or RTF format attachments, they are not send out. They simply just remain in the Outbox. All other mails are fine.

Please help… I have tried to uninstall and reinstall avast. But it didn’t work.
My friends are facing the same problem too.

Is there a way to allow Avast/Outlook to send out the emails with RTF files or HTML format attachments?
Hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks.

So many possible factors here.

Which version of Outlook is this or is it Outlook Express?

If it is Outlook are you using the Outlook plugin of avast or the Internet Mail provider?

Oh, which operating system are you using?

What kind of email account are you sending mail to? Is this a regular POP/SMTP account or is this a Hotmail account or another type of Webmail account using a third party program to send mail?

Please give us some more information to help.

To Alan’s questions, I would like to add:
Did you install any other antivirus in the past? Which one?
Are you using any other antivirus program or firewall or security program, besides avast?

Add to these questions:

during the recent updates, my Outlook started acting strangely.

What updates, windows, outpost, what updates ?

Thanks for the prompt replies.

I am currently using Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 (11.8010.8107) SP2.

My OS is Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2.

If I am not mistaken, I am using the Outlook plugin of avast (avast! On-Access Scanner for Outlook/Exchange).

My email is a webmail POP/SMTP account. I have tried on my webmail by logging in and sending mails in it with HTML/RTF files attached, there was no problem. The problem only arrives when I use Outlook.

I have not installed any other antivirus in the past. I am using Windows Firewall.
Both Windows XP Home Edition & Outlook 2003 are updated recently.

My avast was set on auto updates. I am not sure which version of the updates for avast caused the problem, as it is only once awhile that I send mails with HTML/RTF files attached. I am very sure that in the past, there was no problem for sending those files.

Thank you so much for assisting to help on this issue of mine.
If you need more details, feel free to ask. I will revert back asap.

You’re right.

Well… aren’t you using Outllok to have a problem?
The Webmail, like any other webpage is scanned by WebShield and Standard Shield providers.

Does it use the standard 110 and 25 ports?
Does it use encryption of SSL or TSL?

  1. Make sure the avast plugin is not disabled into MS Outlook > Help > About > Disabled items
  2. Maybe you can add the following line to the [MailScanner] section of \data\avast4.ini:

Log=20

Then generate some traffic, simulate the problem (send an email with attachment) and then post here the contents of the file \data\log\aswMaiSv.log

Garek

you have spoken of using a Webmail account, logging on and having no problem sending HTML/RTF files using it.

Then you tell us you are using the same Webmail account via Outlook and having problems.

Is this Webmail account one of the well know services like Hotmail, MSN, Yahoo or GMail or is it just a regular ISP POP3/SMTP account that also allows you log in via a Web interface?

If it is one of the “well known” services then please tell us how you wre accessing the account from Outlook.
