Package is broken

Hi,

I run Avast! version 4.8.1368 Pro on Widows 7 Home Basic.

I noticed since 2 days (I am not sure if this started to happen earlier) sometimes after updating (semiautomatic) a second line saying:
Package is broken

Today I didn’t get this warning, but the message says instead that the update is already up to date though it is 110511 while today is 12 and the update requests (3 times) are made by Avast.

Is it a temporary situation? Or it is better to remove/install Avast.

Thank you for any advice.

Kerim

Sorry… it seems that an earlier poster “Definitions download but don’t install” has asked the same and got a reply. So I will try to update the definitions manually as suggested

Why didn’t you upgrade to version 6 ?
Please, upload (attach) the avast log:
C:\ProgramData\AVAST Software\Avast\log\Setup.log
or C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast5\Setup\setup.log

If the file is too big for the forum, post the last 400-500 lines of it.

Thank you Tech for your prompt reply.

I wish I can upgrade to version 6, but the friend who I asked to pay for the subscription (hence only his email is known to Alwil group) is no more available (to me in the least) so I had no choice but to use the key I got for 4.8 till the end of 2012.

About the subject here, if the manual update fails, it will be my pleasure to get your help after uploading the setup.log

Kerim

Kerim, you can convert 4.8 license file to version 6 for free.

Hi Tech,

As far as I remember, when I heard of Avast 5, I was able, as you said, converting one 4.8 to version 5 for free by using my 4.8 key (I paid for 5 PCs 3 years, but I am not sure their order, made by the friend, was for how many PCs in total).

But then when I tried to do the same later for the other 4 PCs (after a few months I think), the new version of Avast 5 asked for a new key that should be received first by the email used for the initial subscription (which is no more possible to me).

So do you think if I will download Avast 6, I will not be asked for a new key other than the one I have for 4.8?

Sorry to ask your confirmation because as you know… downloading… removing… installing… checking… and if, at the end, this fails, I have to repeat all to reinstall 4.8

Thank you

Kerim

I downloaded the manual VPS… then I run it but it said that VPS is already up to date though from Avast info I see it 110510-1.

Now I tried again to update from Avast icon… AND IT WORKED… happy end
Sorry for taking your time but I am still interested to hear your advice on how to use the original key for 4.8 to convert to Avast 6.

Contact sales@avast.com with your conversion problem.

Oh… I did it already since long and that is why I was real surprised now that a new solution for my situation might be possible

Quick note for anyone reading this and comparing to their situation.

On our LAN we have a mixed set of versions.

The 4.8 people saw the warning message that started the thread – I will be upgrading them.
The 5.1.889 folks didn’t see any problem (but I will upgrade them anyways – just good idea).
The 6.0.x folks didn’t see any problem.

I guess this is a good motivation to finally get everyone updated to the latest 6.0.1125.

It is a very good idea indeed if one doesn’t have to pay twice as in my case

Why do you have to pay twice?

Try to do a manual update to the latest VPS version 110512-0 as I believe there was a problem for some with VPS 110511-1.

You are right. Even it worked using the usual update from Avast icon. Now I have VPS version 110512-0.

I can live with 4.8
As I pointed it out above, I couldn’t pay (end of 2009) directly from my email for 4.8 … why?! It is rather a long story

So the only valid key I can use now is of 4.8 after I lost contact with the one who paid for me hence the one who can get the new key to convert my 4.8 to 6 for free. But thank you for asking.

Why don’t you change to Avast 6 free on the machine you don’t have a key for?
That’s as good as 4.8 pro, if not even better…

I wouldn’t keep a 4.8 Pro version.

I usually don’t like using free versions (not only Avast) on my personal PCs and on the ones at work unless they are very simple programs.
I am afraid it is an old habit so I need time to change it :-\

Of course, if my business is fine lately as it was in the previous years I woudn’t hesitate a minute to pay for a new subscription for my PCs. I can always assume what I paid for 4.8 is lost in a fire for example ;D

Well I have been using the avast free version for over seven years and to be honest it is the biggest competitor to avast Pro than many other so called paid AV options. In fact avast free bet many paid AV solutions in a test.

I agree with you.
I am using Avast since too many years after Norton AV couldn’t be able to accept my renewal.
Since then Avast became my favorite and I use to recommend it, without hesitation, to any friend looking for an AV program, free or paid.

What I learnt today is that the free version of Avast 6 has also all the features of Avast 4.8 Pro if not more. If this is the case, installing the free version 6 is indeed a better idea than keeping the 4.8 Pro.

For instance, thank you all here for clarifying this point.

You’re welcome.
