Ever since I uninstalled the free version, I keep getting the white page that we’ve all seen a million times that reads “page not found” when clicking a link or typing a correct address. When that happens, I have to close the browswer and open a new one. I uninstalled Avast to see if it was the culprit, and sure enough it was. I’m still using IE6, which I assume shouldn’t be an issue. Is there a particular setting I can change or turn off to keep this from happening? Thanks!
I use Windows xp Professional. The version of Avast is 4.7. I’m using Windows Firewall and no other AV software. I do have Ad-Aware, but it was installed recently while this issue was already occurring. Prior to installing Avast, I had uninstalled Trend Micro’s PC-cillin.
My issue isn’t the inability to connect to the internet. The connection is always there. I’ll simply click on a link either on my homepage or another site that brings me to the “page not found” screen. If I close the browser window, open a new one, and click that same link, the intended page will load. Same goes for typing in an address. I’ll type www.google.com and get that screen. Once again, this doesn’t happen all the time, but often enough to where it’s annoying. And it’s completely random. When I uninstalled Avast, the problem disappeared. I never saw the “page not found” screen no matter how many times I opened my home page or others. When I reinstalled the program, this began to happen again.
If you disable only WebShield, does the problem disappears?
Maybe could help activate logging in WebShield:
Edit \data\avast4.ini file
Find the section [WebScanner]
Add the line:
EnableLogging=1
Restart Web Shield in XP (terminate and start again) or whole PC in case of Win98
Browse (trying to access some webpages)
The log file are \data\log\ashwebsv.log and ashwebsv.ws.
They would be accessible when WebShield is terminated again.
Post them here or send by mail to rypacek (at) asw.cz
After that, disable the logging to avoid a big log file.
I’m glad… but it seems impossible to be this what fixed…
You just start logging, nothing else… you did not change anything on settings…
It’s a mystery.
Oh, remember to shutdown the logging or the log file will grow up indefinitely.
Back again. Same thing’s happening again. This time, a little more frequently. Is there a way to leave that code in the .ini file and disable something else to keep from getting the huge log file? Is that even something you’d recommend?
This does not mean that the problem is avast…
Some other software (or configuration) in your computer could be messing the things and generating a conflict or problem…
