Password recovery

How do you recover a forgotten password to access Avast 4 home edition?

Uninstall and reinstall avast!. This is the only way.

Thanks for the advice. I stupidly changed the password when reinstalling OS and various other programs and now I come to use the system can I remember it?

Oh, you can edit the Windows Registry as well… Please, send an IM to Vlk.
He could guide you

pexx,

There are Password Recovery programs available. I did have one but don’t know what I did with it.

You can try a Google search for “password recovery programs” to see what you can find.

The programs will recover lost, deleted and corrupted password files and reconstruct many of them.
In addition, they can remove the “*****” so you can see the actual alphanumerics.

Good luck

Hopefully that last part is an optional “extra”, or at the very least doesn’t change the screen display (which is, I thought, the only place the asterisks existed).

The original – and probably still – main purpose of the asterisks, after all, was protection from someone else able to see your screen in a relatively public place, like a library or “internet cafe”.

I don’t think such a tool would help you with avast.
As far as I remember, the password isn’t stored anywhere (only some kind of hash) - so there is nothing you could uncover behind the asterisks (actually, I think there are no asterisks in the dialog… are they?)

Boys, as I said first, send an IM to Vlk and everything will works fine… ;D
He knows how to ‘round’ this password trap 8)

Igor,

No, there are no ***** in the password group for Avast. I was just speaking generally.
Passwords are stored in a pwd file on the hard drive.
I do go after them occasionally but my memory has improved and I don’t forget them as much. ;D

As Technical said, VLK has the talent with “passwords”

hi !! even i lost my avast password… please lemme know how to reset it… thanx

Hi…

You probably won’t be able to follow Tech’s instructions becuase users with under 20 posts are no longer allowed to PM, a change brought about since June, 2004, when this thread dates from, unless Vlk chooses to respond directly.

You will need to follow RejZoR’s instructions instead.

Uninstall avast using this tool…

If you’re using the Home version, reinstall avast from here…

http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html (or whichever language version you prefer.)

If you have deleted the e-mail containing your program key, you can reapply for a new one here…

http://www.avast.com/eng/home-registration.php

and if you need help with installing the key, please see this video tutorial here…

Hope this helps.

May God Bless you!

If you are talking about the password to protect the avast settings in avast anti-virus:
Then the short answer is to reinstall avast - read Reply #1 generally that is the only option.

None of the other replies offers any other way.
