but still can’t open pdf files
and I am unable to get rid of the downloaded file from the desktop, getting a message about access denied. It will not delete. Did I download a virus!!???
I use this program (or something sounding very much like it in other computers) without any trouble. The problem is that I downloaded it to the desktop, ran a quick scan with my Avast and then installed it. All looked fine. But I cannot find the program installed anywehre by any name, it does not open pdf files and I cannot get rid of the exe file from the desktop.
I am afraid of restarting in case it does even more damage id«f it is a virus. And now that VirusTotal cannot load it, I get even more worried.
I don’t know if this might be avast blocking the actual upload, if you haven’t stopped avast to upload it (not recommended) or by excluding the file/folder (see below) so it doesn’t get intercepted by avast.
For avast 5.0 - Create a folder called Suspect in the C: drive. Now exclude that folder in the File System Shield, Expert Settings, Exclusions, Add, type (or copy and paste) C:\Suspect* That will stop the File System Shield scanning any file you put in that folder.
For avast 4.8 - Create a folder called Suspect in the C: drive. Now exclude that folder in the Standard Shield, Customize, Advanced, Add, type (or copy and paste) C:\Suspect* That will stop the standard shield scanning any file you put in that folder.
You should now be able to export any file in the chest to this folder and upload it to VirusTotal without avast alerting.
I just saw that it is a large download using dial-up, so I didn’t download it to try and check it out. Hopefully by doing what I suggested you will be able to upload the suspect file to virustotal.
I did as you suggested but with th same resulkt: Exception
The file will not load onto VirusTotal. This time went, I tghink a bit further to around 75% and then exception!
Meanwhile I had restarted computer and was able to send the file to the garbage bin. However, I find it all very starnge because whatever it installed acnnot be seen and the PDF file viwer is nowwhere to be seen.
Well, it seems that I am a fool. The pdf xchange viewer that I use in other computers is apparently from Tracker Software Porducts and what I downloaded was from Softonic.
Softonic is not my first choice for software download…
Official site seems to be http://www.docu-track.com/product/pdf-xchange-viewer
The product does not seem to be infected.
Maybe it’s just a poor pdf software. Indeed it’s not my choice to manage pdf.
Try installing RevoUninstaller and check if it is listed there (you can use its own search feature to locate the software).
Thanks for the offer, but the zip file is still 18.2MB, about 72 minutes, too long just to download to check out the detection. Even if I found the file responsible I would have to upload to various sites to analyse it and uploads are half the dial-up speed, snails pace.
yes 18.2mb according to my Program Files David - added screenshot of what is in folder (where on earth does that size come from?)
other than this folder, there is nothing else on the computer related to the viewer - but returns excellent pdf to the screen
Edit - okay here is the remainder - approx 30mb (screenshot)
sorry guys, I’m currently on a computer with loads of extras and I’m slowly working my way through them (- like jungle it was)
It seems that all you have downloaded is some sort of softonic download manager to download products from the site not the actual PDF-XChange Viewer program.
This program as is shown comes clean in a VT scan link supplied by Pondus and not even avast alerts on this file in the VT results nor avast on my system either. So I don’t know what happened on your system.
