Persistent Malware/Viral Infection -- Help!

Okay I’m new to these forums and avast! so I apologize if I am raising something that has already been addressed. My computer has been infected for the last 2 weeks and nothing I have done has helped.

At the time of infection my computer was protected by McAfee AntiVirus Plus and Ad-Aware (Please don’t tell me how stupidly unsecure I was; I realize it now all too late…). Since that time I have installed avast!, AVG Anti-Virus Free, Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware, and Spybot Search and Destroy. Overkill maybe, but I started to find that each was discovering things the others were not…

In short, 2 weeks later, my computer is being incredibly slow, Google Chrome no longer works (though this may be unrelated), McAfee won’t even perform a scan, and whatever web-browser I do use is being hijacked (Google links take me to other websites, random pop-ups are generated but are either intercepted by avast! or closed by me before they load). In past scans avast! has found JS:Prontexi-BM, JS:Pdfka-ACS, win32:malware-gen (several times in several locations), Java:Djewers-C, and in a recent avast! scan AVG actually popped up with 3 infections of Downloader.Generic9.ccsz but AVG was only able to remove one of them.

avast! Has found nothing since 6/14 but the symptoms mentioned above continue persisting. I’m really starting to get afraid that I may be out of options. I don’t know what to do. Please, can somebody help me?

Hi billfiredrake,

Don’t you have two resident scanners running next to each other, they will start to detect each others signatures and make the machine insecure. Just use one resident scanner and the other solutions as on-demand only, also better for the old CPU.

Fill me in with a freefixer log, attach the log-file to your next posting. Freefixer can be downloaded here:
http://www.freefixer.com/static/freefixersetup.exe
Do not fix anything yet, just pass on the results of the scan,

  1. That sure is overkill and also means troubles…! Never run two resident AVs…!! Also don’t run Spybot with avast…! Solution: Deinstall AVG and Spybot asap…!!! (Leave Mbam as on demand scanner, tough)
  2. Run a boot time scan with avast afterwards…! (32bit only)
    Post back your results…

Using more than one anti-virus program is not advisable.

McAfee also seems to be in there somewhere still, lose that as well.

True…! And thanks…! I missed that in my reply…

Edit: Also drop Ad-aware, if still installed. And a clean reinstall of avast would be a really good idea…!

Wow that was fast! Okay, thank you all for that advice, I will remove the other scanners soon, but first I want to run that freefixer scan. All of this is fairly new to me… I’ve never had viral problems in the many years I’ve been using computers…

Edit: On second thought I’ll remove the other stuff first. It just occurred to me that those tasks may inflate the log…

As you like, but freefixer will probably go nuts with all that AVs installed…
But let’s see, I’m very interested in the results.

Hahaha! I just edited my last post because I realized that!

All I can say is good luck on getting rid of your infections. What everyone said previously pretty much covers everything up.

And yeah, using more than one resident antivirus is not recommended, that’s probably why you experienced system slowdown.

Yep cakedoer2 & Asyn,

Good analysis of his overall situation, he will learn from this and report back, let us give him a heartily welcome to these here forums, welcome billfiredrake,

I have attached the log. Really, thank you so much for your help!

Edit: By the way, I remembered that I forgot to mention not deleting McAfee. Though I will do so soon, I didn’t have the heart to just delete something I paid money for :-\

I hate to be a pest, but has anyone found anything helpful? I’m really eager to repair this problem and I am truly grateful for the help you guys are offering!!!

So, to keep us updated, what security related software is running right now.
What did you get rid of…? What is still there…??
I guess polonus will get back to you refering to your log.

I deleted AVG, Spybot, and Ad-Aware. avast! Remains, as does McAfee for the reason I previously mentioned. It was an expensive subscription and it was apparently for nothing…

Well, it’s up to you, but as long as you have more than one resident AV installed…

I had Mcafee with Avast! on my pc.

It was very exciting! Not in a good way, though.
Blue screens started slowly, 1 every couple days. But soon more often.

I learned from the experience, but this is probably not the easiest or best way to learn.
Learning from history and others mistakes is almost always better than having to learn from your own.

1 resident AV only. Or the loss of $$$ for your McAfee subscription will pale in comparison to
the cost of offline tech support to come in and restore your PC from a brick back to a computer again.

McAfee will conflict sooner or later…
Keep it if you want to use the license time.
Go to avast if you trust it more

I’ve dropped all license period of Norton and McAfee, uninstall them, run the uninstall tools, install avast.
I want my computer running smoothly than using a license period.

Well I’m persuaded… Sounds logical to me!

What next after that is done?

Sometimes, McAfee won’t be completely removed if, before, you do not uninstall Avast, including the use of its “Uninstall Application” if necessary.
