I just went to send a PM to a member of this board and noticed that I no longer have a “New Message” tab in my in box plus I can’t do a “Send this member a personal message”.
I know that the rules state 20 posts or more (I certainly fit in that category). Has this been disabled? I have only sent to 2 members in all the time that I have used this board so I obviously have not abused PMs .
Yes it has been disabled, since the spam attack a few months ago it was temporarily disabled and it was said that a temporary measure was a min of 20 posts, to avoid drive by PM spamming. This however, wasn’t implemented and a permanent solution was being sought.
This hasn’t transpired and I suspect it is more likely that the forum software will be updated and that is very much on the back burner as the Administrator said it isn’t a simple one click operation and time has to be given to more important things, namely avast.
OK, thanks again. I though that it had been fixed, so I will just use email for now.
Hi,
I’m not allow to post or reply to a PM…
Is there any way for a mod/admin to unlock that for me…?
An user post me something which need a reply, his personal email is not shown…
Unfortunately not, the restriction is 20 posts for the reasons mentioned above.
For the most part people come to the forums with a problem that they wish to resolve and that is best done directly in the forums; where not only will the problem be seen by many people who could help, but the answer might help others reading or who use the search function in the future.
You say his personal email isn’t displayed, the same is true for yours, this is a security measure so that you and they aren’t subjected to spam.
I have no idea what the contents of the PM might be that requires it to be private or could it not be discussed in the general forum if it isn’t directly an avast problem. I guess there is nothing to stop you posting a topic in the general forum:
Subject To user name, I got the PM.
Text Unfortunately I can’t use the PM function, insufficient post count. If you want a personal reply, PM me again with an email address I can reply to. Or if you agree we can discuss it here.
That should cover it, whatever you do don’t publish the contents of a PM without their permission, especially if it is personal.
In understood.
I agree.
I totattly agree.
I’ll do that as I have no choice. First time I see a rule like that in a forum by the way :
Yes, not many forums have this restriction, though some don’t even have an internal PM function. Had you been in the forums when the PM function was abused to send spam of very objectionable material.
You would understand, especially since this forum is made up of a very varied audience from teens to senior citizens, male and female, from may different countries and religions. So you can see why this can’t be allowed to happen again. Forum members that are reasonably active will soon have that functionality available.
Hi DavidR,
Be confident I totally understood your explanations about the PM restriction.
By the way, I have never seen PM abuse on a forum till yet… Post abuse by spam for sure but never by PM!
That’s why I had been quite surprised
Just hope that no user will spam the forum to reach 20 posts limit to get PM feature available! lol
Believe that spammers are killed very fast here
