Please Help can't open Google

Hi,
I run Windows Vista on my PC. And about 4 days ago, I cant open google.com or google.co.uk on my PC, it keeps saying “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage”
but gmail.com com still opens. All other webpages open perfectly.

I have tried following the advise on
http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=46340.msg389199#msg389199

and the only entry there is:
127.0.0.1 localhost
::1 localhost

tried saving just the first entry and all I get is
“Cannot create the C:\Windows\Systems32\drivers\etc\hosts files
Make sure that the path and file name are correct”

How can I get Google back? Thanks

H

Have you tried Opera or Firefox?

Welcome jusspackin

Download HijackThis then install it then run it then post its log here to help us see why you can’t get to google:

In Vista you must have Administrator rights to replace the HOSTS file.

I prefer to use HostsMan to manage the HOSTS file but It must be started by using Run as administrator.
I like its browser speedup proxy HostsServer:
http://www.abelhadigital.com <== I am running 3.2.71 Beta7 with hpHosts and MVPS HOSTS files only.

You can attach it by using + Additional Options…

First thing I notice is that you are still running SP1 when SP2 has been out for a while.

You should go to Control Panel then Automatic Updates then select Automatic (recommended) or at least Notify me but don’t automatically download or install them.

Hi YoKenny

sorry, I’m a novice when it comes to IT, please what is SP1 and 2
and windows has been unable to install updates for a while, keeps saying Error code 0x80072efd

Looks like a 017 hijack to the Ukraine.

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial42.html#O17Diag

Run HijackThis! again and fix the 017 entries. Reboot.

Run the usual free adware/spyware scanners.

SUPERAntiSpyware Free
Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware

Download, install and update the programs.
Always select the option to quarantine any malware found rather than delete it, then you will be able to restore files or registry entries wrongly identified as malware- a rare but not unknown event for any malware scanner.

I Googled the error and found:
