Please help me uninstall this mess

I have been running Avast for about 2 weeks. In that ENTIRE time a red box keeps popping up saying that there is a problem with updating. I click on the box and it tells me it is unable to connect to the server.

in fact it says this even if I try and do a manual update :

Information about current update:
Last encountered error: Can’t select any server for downloading (from 0).

Total time: 0 s

I am sick to death of getting this popup. Also when I go into the settings for the program the blue selected area of the menu STAYS on my screen no matter how many times I hit refresh. The only thing I can do is reboot to get the image to disappear. Yet another annoyance.

So after being fed up with this program I have decided to uninstall it and move on. EXCEPT when I go to add/remove programs and click on change/remove abosolutely nothing happens. There is no uninstall option in the program I can find nor is there an uninstall file in the program folder.

Can anyone tell me how to be ridden of this program short of reinstalling my OS? This so called antivirus program is more like a virus than anything else.

I am running Windows XP 64.

I only wish you had come here when you first experienced the problem, rather than wait two weeks.

The C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\Setup\servers.def file looks like it is corrupt or 0KB in size - You can try and download the servers.def file, and put it in the above folder http://files.avast.com/iavs4x/servers.def.
Or delete it and try a manual update it should also download it again I believe.

There is an Uninstall and it should appear when you click add remove programs Change/Remove, so this and the previous issue you mention it looks like your install didn’t work correctly.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here if the add remove programs failed.

When this occur, just after logon (boot) or at any time, any automatic update gives this error message?

Which firewall do you use?
Did you test what David posted?

The message should stay there just some seconds… not freeze there… something is wrong in your computer…

Do you have any other antivirus installed in your computer?

I won’t say that… avast is a serious program and does its job
