Please Help

I downloaded and installed Free Avast Home Edition but I can’t view the Resident protection and I can’t view both icons on the right bottom of desktop.

I use winXP.

What can I do?

Cris :frowning:

Have (or did) you have another AV installed in this system, if so what and how did you get rid of it ?

What other security based software do you have that might block new startup entries, e.g. Spybot S&D (TeaTimer), AdAware (AdWatch), SpySweeper, PrevX, WinPatrol, ProcessGuard, etc. ?

Were there any errors or warnings when you installed avast or after the first bot ?

Yes I installed Ad-Adware too.

Why? Can avast have problem with this?

If Yes how can solve it?

Cris

If you’re using the paid version of Ad-aware, Ad-watch feature could block the avast startup entries…
Disable the Ad-watch, check the proper option in the avast Appearance tab of settings to bring back the icons. Boot ::slight_smile:

If you have the paid version of adaware and you have the TeaTimer resident element enabled it can stop the startup of ashDisp.exe, the avast icon. Then you nee to disable the teatimer function or ensure that you don’t deny ashDisp.exe when it queries it.

What about my other two questions ?

TeaTimer is the SpyBot Search and Destroy resident 8)

Glad you are keeping an eye on me, yes it is AdWatch ;D

Regard your other two questions,

I haven’t installed another AV and the avast setup didn’t give me any kind of problems.

Cris

I installed Spy and destroy too.

Sorry for forgetting this.

Cris

If you have spybot search & destroy ensure that ‘TeaTimer’ isn’t enabled.

Did you ever have another AV (even if you got rid of it), e.g. you never had another AV on this system before installing avast ?

I have installed AVG antivirus before moving to avast.

I didn’t have ever Teatimer on in Spy and Destroy.

The problem is still on.

I didn’t understand how I can ensure avast icons to be shown by working on setting of Ad adware.

I tried to disable adwatch and the function loadin at window startup, I rebooted but the icons don’t appeared.

For knowledge my adwatch settings involve:

Active and automatic options:on
Load on window startup: on
realtime Performance: high
Blocking options:
Lock start up section: on
Lock executable file associations: on
Block possible browser hijacks attemps: on
Block tracking cookies: on
Activate pop up blocker: on
Log blocked Registry activities: on
Log blocked tracking cookies: on
Log blocked Memory activities: on
Log internal events: on

I watched at the running process of Ad-watch and I couldn’t see ashDisp.exe. How I can restore it ?

Thanks

Cris

Ad-watch blocked the ashdisp.exe link in the startup items.
Just check the option in the avast Appearance tab of settings.
Or, download avast! External Control clicking on ‘Control’ in my signature. Unzip it and run. You’ll see avast! tweaker option. Choose to show system tray icon and let us see if it helps.
Or, another way to fix the problem, just add the path to ashDisp.exe into HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (as the value named avast!).

For the ‘i’ icon (VRDB): http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=14356.msg121337#msg121337

I’m really sorry but I didn’t succed to make it work.

I’m not very able with PC and probably did something wrong in following your instructions.

I decided to uninstall Ad-Aware and I installed Perfect Process instead.

It Seems to work fine with Avast.

Cris

Cris, after installing avast I think you could install Ad-aware, it will work. The problem is that Ad-aware avoids the correct avast installation.
Anyway, I don’t know it now, after having Perfect Process, it will conflict or not with Ad-aware.
