Poll: which antivirus were you using when you've got infected?

If you’re in this board of the forum, most probably you’re, unfortunately, get infected :frowning:
I’m thinking that not all of you were using avast (which would have missed a malware  but also other free options.
Or you have an OEM antivirus (preinstalled) and come here due to the great avast forum support.

Updated avast/defs - this was way back in 4.8 times though… :stuck_out_tongue:

Undetected spambot using my pc as a base. I am the proof behind keeping the mail shield, even when you may not need/use it ;D Even though avast didn’t catch the infection, it saw the actions, and brought me here, so not a complete failure.

To be honest I really don’t see the purpose of this poll, as you are probably aware I’m no fan of polls. Pole dancers perhaps.

I have had avast for over seven years and have never been infected whilst using it, lucky I guess :stuck_out_tongue:

My last infection prior to installing avast was when using AVG, many, many years ago, Blaster and Sasser infections if memory serves me well.

My favorite pole dancer is blond.

I was also using AVG and it was Sasser infection if I remember.

Avg was what i had way back when the nasty got in, to long ago to remember what it was but the HDD had to be replaced.

It is long time ago that I was infected. I was using Norton those days, and with naked lady I got infected with a porn dialer :-[ The good thing was that that one time incident started my interest in pc security

Greetz, Red.

I had AVG 8 or 8.5 ??? at the time I was infected so it’s probably 4-5 years ago.
I got infected with very nasty Rogue AntiVirus XP 2008 and had to remove it with SAS and MBAM.

Yeah, I know that :stuck_out_tongue:

You do not live dangerously David

You do remember who Alexander Graham Kowalski was? The first telephone pole!

Them meaning of the poll is that the number of posts here in virus section is growing up quickly.
Is really avast the one which cannot deal with them or there are people using other antivirus that come here for help (and probably changing to avast).
Of course, the meaning is not know old forum members situation… We all are clean with avast

6 vote for AVG?Guys it’s not the 1st of april,seriously

I cleaned computers with all antivirus programs, without exception (paid \ free).

This questionnaire is not authoritative because in this case only Avast users arise

In Serbia, Avast is the most used

Silly poll… everyone here (mostly) is an Avast user… this poll is useless … your sample population is very biased. Sorry to pop your bubble.

This is like asking people standing in line (queue for you Brits) in an ice cream store if they like ice cream. Golly, I bet a lot say YES !

Really?
I have 6 votes for AVG, one for McAfee and other for Kaspersky.
People could be moving from the antivirus to get better protection and come to avast.
Read the numbers of the poll and drop prejudices

and what conclusions can you draw from the poll with limited responses on a single vendors (Avast) site?

I would think this site would be a good analysis of effectiveness from a much larger pool…

http://whensecuritymatters.com/index.php/Comparative-tests/Antivirus-Proactive-Protection-Test.html

or

http://www.scribd.com/doc/50414739/An-Empirical-Study-of-Commercial-Antivirus-Software-Effectiveness

They are precisely the ones I want to ask: why did the users come to avast forums? Just because they’re using avast or get infected and move here.

I’m not saying that. You are.
I’m not testing the effectiveness of my poll. I’m testing the avast forum users that get infected

I’m not saying my poll has any great conclusion on comparing antivirus.

Personally I don’t feel this poll serves much of a purpose as I stated earlier, but giving references to studies, etc. that positively ancient doesn’t help either. One is using avast 4.7 - Results of the Proactive Protection test (08/12/2007). The other just as outdated, malware collected from April to July 2009, though not as bad.

This paper presents an empirical study on the effectiveness of six commercial AVs against Windows malware collected from April to July 2009.

Whilst I get the point of a wider based set of results would be those set of results would also have to be recent to have any purpose. Any results in this poll would be considered skewed no matter what the end result is, whatever that result or its purpose is.

Since there is no idea of when that infection occurred (in my case over seven years ago) or what it actually was most will be ancient history in terms of malware progression. So I really don’t see what purpose this poll can serve.

I can explain you by IM. I’m not mad. I act with a purpose.
But, I know, you won’t agree with my arguments regardless they are ;D
Will it worth?

Hmmm, details wanted? As of this posting, that lone McAfee vote is mine. Was an OEM pre-install (no shock there). Infection was a rogue.
Left McAfee behind due to 3 main reasons,
1: Post infection anxiety (what I know now to be a bit of a over-reaction, as the rogues constantly beat any/all vendors)
2: Free trial was almost up anyway.
3: Word of mouth Avast! recommendation from multiple computer educated people (Avast!'s hallmark)

Thanks Gargamel, what have made you come here and not on McAfee support?
Why do people come here (avast forums) to get clean?
