POP3 email not working

Since I updated Avast, I’m unable to retrieve or send POP3 email. I get an error message “an error occurred with the POP3 mail server”. If I stop the Avast mail provider, I can retrieve mail again.
Using:
Avast 4.7.871
Thunderbird 1.5.0.7
POP server port 110, SMTP 25.

Which firewall do you use?
Is ashMaiSv.exe allowed to connect?
Are you using Windows XP?

I’m using XP SP2 & the XP firewall. Not sure about ashMaiSv.exe - do I need to create an exception for it in the firewall?

I found the problem (I think). There was also an NVidia firewall blocking ashMaiSv.exe. I disabled that firewall and it seems to be working.

Glad you succeed

One of my clients started having problems like this very recently. They have XP workstations, on a domain, with local firewalls disabled.

If I uninstall avast, everything works fine. With Avast installed, access to our external pop and smtp is intermittent, even via telnet.

Access to the same servers from another site works just fine.

All the local clients have been updated by the management console.

The only anti-spam we’ve got is spybot, and afaik it doesn’t run a resident agent.

Any ideas?
