Precautions to take for avast 4.8 users before installing avast 5.0!

Hi guys,
I think people are rather having trouble after the installation of avast 5
So, I decided to create this topic instead of repeating and repeating the same thing to users who got the same problem

If you have avast 4.8,
1.Download avast 5 here:
http://download.cnet.com/Avast-Free-Antivirus/3000-2239_4-10019223.html?tag=contentMain;contentAux
(This is a safe place to download avast so don’t worry if there are malwares or not  )
2.Download aswclear.exe from here:
http://www.avast.com/uninstall-utility
3.Read well the instructions in the page(save the file to the desktop)
4.Uninstall avast from the control panel (Add/Remove Program) (Change/Remove avast) (Uninstall) (Next).
5.Reboot
6.Enter the safe mode
7.Run the aswclear.exe
8.Reboot again(After this you may delete the aswclear.exe because you won’t need it anymore
9.Run the avast 5 installation ^^

Hello Shiw liang,

Good job. But, Put number 8 on top. I mean that should be number one.
Keep it up.

Thx

I don’t think the above procedure is necessary, at least with the latest version 5.0.462.
I believe that all upgrade scenarios are now covered correctly (without the need to uninstall v4.x).

Thanks
Vlk

Just to make things clear,

I just wanted the procedure of clean install to be right, thats it. whether it is from 4.8 to 5 or anything of that sort.

Thx

I have installed Avast 5.0 over Avast 4.8 on my 2 computers, both XP and my mom’s XP. All 3 installs went well and no problems. I didn’t not uninstall 4.8 before hand. I did this a month ago. All three computers are having no problems.

Before install, I did make sure all 3 computers were free of spyware and defraged them if they needed it.

I just wanted to report my experience.

Thank you, Avast! My mom and I are very appreciative of all the work being done, by your team, to keep our computers safe.

Becky

Hello,

In fact I have done the same thing on many computers, that is, install 5 over 4.8 and have had no problems. But I just wanted the clean install procedure to be right and shiw is learning things, I guess, and I just wanted to help him out. and I know you have not said anything against me.

Cheers

No disrespect from me.
I just wanted to report my experience, installing 5.0

Iam barely above a beginner computer user. I just wanted to let other beginners know that it doesn’t have to be complicated, to update from 4.8 to 5.0.

I followed the directions offered on the Avast website and all went well. Sorry if I stepped on any toes. It wasn’t my intentions.

Becky

@ speckledbird

Nothing to worry. Your views are welcome.

Thx for the feedback.

nmb

Yup it’s okay I understand but everytime I go to facebook many people complaining about errors or what
Oh if it is like that then everything is fine I think people won’t have to pass these steps in install avast 5 or else that would have been long for them ^^

@ shiw

In any case you are asking a person to install from scratch, please modify your first post : 8 is number one, that is, download the latest full setup file first.

nmb

+1
You definitely don’t want to be “out here” without a-v protection, so make sure to download the new installer first, i.e. before disabling 4.8.

I originally attempted to upgrade from 4.8 to 5. To be fair it was when Avast 5 first came out and there were a lot of problems to work through. I attempted to do a upgrade and was left with a OS with a damaged Avast installation. I rebooted and ended up uninstalling 4.8 out of frustration. I rebooted again even though I wasn’t prompted to and installed Avast 5 and then rebooted again. LAWLZ! Except for my current problem with the exclusions in the Web Shield Avast 5 is working perfectly for me. So either their was a upgrade installation file that I wasn’t aware of. Or Avast was having one of those days. But I like Avast 5 I just have a few minor suggestions.

okay nmb ^^

Hi Vlk,

Does it now remove the avast4 folder in TEMP?
I found that I had to delete this myself.

Also, does it remove the entires in the sounds dialog that are from avast! 4?
This has confused some users about how the sounds work in 5…

-Scott-

lol when I uninstall avast I delete the temporary files left do a registry scan.
Go to regedit again delete the awill software folder.
Restart and run the aswclear!

Well I can only recount my experience, I installed 5.0.418 over 4.8.1368 and it retained the registration information, uninstalled 4.8 including the avast4 folder I believe (it isn’t there now and I can’t recall doing this manually).

I run regular weekly registry cleanups and can’t recall any redundant avast4 sound entries (or other avast4 related entries) being flagged, so for me it did a relatively good job.

One thing though it didn’t remove the antivirus section in the windows event viewer and the associated entries, though I don’t know what was responsible for creating it in the first place. Though by all accounts if you uninstall avast 4.8 before installing 5.0, then that section is removed.

Yes I think the upgrade scenarios will now be covered, and over-installation is good procedure, though I haven’t run test, but DavidR has run procedure so that is all good. I actual like that antivirus section in Eventviewer, cos It sometimes gives me things like this

Sign of “HTML:Iframe-inf” has been found in “hxxp://ust.edu/graduates/forums/cache/lang_cache/en/pb/htm/direct-lender-unsecured-stated-business-loan-fund-in-5-days.html{gzip}” file.

which is avast analysis (I believe) of html page which was blocked and has a quite interesting by-line, perhaps saying that in five days time the target user account account will loan funds to an unknown party.

But don’t know much about it really except that it was in the antivirus section in Eventviewer when I was running avast 4.8.

@ DavidR - And so this section in Eventviewer remained when you over-installed?
@ Vlk - is there anything here that makes over-install better option, like new install now seats better with over-install, or is it just matter of preference? (only reply if makes difference, and I read yr reports anyway)

@ Shiw Liang - yes, I saw the thread on Facebook as well. I think a lot of these people maybe made a hash of their installs, and in early days of new release as well, or maybe running 4.8 sub-optimal, or maybe other problems on their desktop, etc, etc, etc…and so they really did need to go through an extended procedure as you put it down there. So you only covering yrself really, which you do need to keep in mind.

And also, i don’t think good policy to direct general public to anywhere near the Registry, just keep that part of operating system for yr own clean up or other tasks, most general public would be totally lost and likely make mistake in Registry - I did notice that you didn’t include it in yr list in the OP, so maybe I didn’t need to bring to yr notice.

What is more surprising last time or yesterday my dad went to http://www.qq.com and continued visiting other pages there for more fighting air forces and finally arrived to a page where there is a woman giving her as* then avast detected a threat but didn’t cut the connection and after 20 seconds laptop’s screen totally black even when turning off again and again when there should be a welcome screen, the screen is totally black and no solution formatted again :frowning:
Even immunet couldn’t do anything =-="

Absolutely agree. Tampering with the computers registry almost always proves hazardous to the the life of the system, especially with those that have no working hand knowledge of it. Great advice.

lol ;D
It is not the first time my system was damaged due to the missing of some part of the registry ;D
So better get a safer one to use
