Pro install

I’ve been using the home version and am attempting to upgrade to pro. I uninstalled the home version. rebooted, installed the pro version on Windows Vista Ultimate, and rebooted. The avast version appears to still be the home version in the ‘about’ message. It accepted by pro registration code, though.

Windows is reporting that I have two anti-virus programs installed but not turned on. Both show up with the name “avast! antivirus” and both reference a file called VistaAux.exe. Going through the procedure to turn either of them on runs the avast update function, but does not clear the message about no anti-virus program being turned on.

So, it’s a mess. How do I clean this up and get the pro version running?

Thanks.

You actually didn’t need to uninstall, just enter the Pro license and the Home version would have been converted.

Have you rebooted since doing this, if not do so and report your findings.

After a reboot, Windows seems happier that I am running anti-virus. But the version still shows as the home version.

Where does it show it is the Home version, in about avast or in Vista Security Centre ?

In the About Avast dialog. See image.

You may have to do a clean reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

    1. Now uninstall avast (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.- 2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. If step 1 failed it may be necessary to run this from safe mode, once complete reboot into normal mode.- 3. install the latest Pro version version that you downloaded, reboot.

After you try David’s suggestions, please, post the last 400-450 lines of avast log: C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\DATA\log\Setup.log

I uninstalled and reinstalled twice, both using all the tricks I know (run as administrator, etc.). In both cases, the install appeared to succeed, but the about box still says I’m running the home version. Also, it won’t accept my registration code.

I’ve attached the log file.

Thanks,

Rick

I can’t find the error in your log.
I suggest an installation from the scratch:

  1. Download the latest version of avast! Uninstall Utility and save it.
  2. Download the latest avast! version and save it.
  3. Uninstall avast from Control Panel (if possible). If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after that.
  4. Run the avast! Uninstall Utility saved on 1. If, for any reason, you can’t run it, try booting in Safe Mode and doing it from there. Anyway, boot after you’ve run it.
  5. Install avast! using the setup saved on 2. It will be good to accept the boot time scanning. Boot.
  6. Check and post the results.

OK, finally got back around to this.

I followed the instructions. It appeared to successfully remove and then install Avast. My registration code for a 3 year purchased license to the Pro version was accepted and says it is good until 2012.

But did it work? I can’t tell. When I look at the “about Avast…” dialog, it says “avast! Version 4.8 Home Edition”. There is an “Upgrade to Professional Edition” item on the toolbar popup menu. If I double click on the toolbar icon, I get the scanner status box, including a big yellow “Attention!” box telling me I should upgrade to professional. At least when I start the virus scanner control panel, it says “professional edition”.

Am I running the professional edition or the home edition with all these offers to upgrade still visible?

Thanks.

Have you rebooted since entering the ‘pro license key’ ?

When you reinstalled, did you not install the pro version as I suggested in Reply #5 ?

That would have ensured you had the pro version and all you needed then would have been to have entered the license key.

Yes, I did follow your #5 instructions, twice. Yesterday I followed #8 which has similar instructions. I’ve rebooted since then. The “about avast…” box still says I’m running the home edition and the toolbar menu still has “upgrade to pro version” on it.

Apparently I just need to get over this. I found the the enhanced user interface, so I must be running the pro version.

Thanks for the help - very much appreciated.

You’re welcome.
