probelm with the virus chest

i want to know how to solve this problem.

i was scanning my pc and after the scan it said: unable to scan chest(redundance cycle)
i dont know what it means. i tried checking by going to the chest itself but there was an error in opening it, so now i’m worried on what happened to the chest and why…

What was the error when you tried to open the Chest ?

Try a repair of avast. Add Remove programs, select ‘avast! Anti-Virus,’ click the Change/Remove button and scroll down to Repair, click next and follow.

First time I’ve reading about this error…
If you run chkdsk (scandisk) in your computer, will it help?

okay i tried repairing it from add or remove programs, but nothing happened, instead 4 more avast shortcut icons appeared. and they were undeleteable. said something like: can’t find source. cannot delete. >.>

thn i did chkdsk, i mean its the fix errors on the hard disk frm:
[my computer>local disk>properties>tools>error checking.] it runs when i reboot my system. (is that the right one? im not sure.)

so i did that and the extra avast icons were gone. but thn i still cant open the virus chest, the errors were:

Program cannot use Chest client: (null)
—>Description: Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

Initialization of Chest files

Program will try to load all Chest files from the following server: (null)

Action was completed with errors!

??? ??? ??? ??? ??? ???

Description: Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

This is usually an indication of corruption.
So it would probably be best to do a clean reinstall.

Download the latest version of avast http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html and save it to your HDD, somewhere you can find it again. Use that when you reinstall.

Download the avast! Uninstall Utility, find it here and save it to your HDD.

  1. Now uninstall (using add remove programs, if you can’t do that start from the next step), reboot.
  2. run the avast! Uninstall Utility, reboot. Note: If step 1 failed you need to run this step from safe mode.
  3. install the latest version, reboot.

ok ive done all the things except running my pc in safe mode.
i dont know how to. i tried pressing f8 during startup but it only showed to select different boot drivers to boot my pc. other thn that, i dont know how to get my pc working on safe mode… :-\

Are you using Window XP or others?

Take a look on this website http://www.computerhope.com/issues/chsafe.htm#02

If step 1 was successful them technically you shouldn’t need to do step 2 from safe mode.

If you are having problems getting into safe mode there s a little trick that might help. Windows Start button > Run > type msconfig. From the System Configuration Window, select the Boot.ini tab, Check the /SAFEBOOT option and click OK. That will automatically boot into safe mode on ‘every’ boot, so once you have done the task, go back into msconfig and reverse the change.

ive done everything, and thers one significant change. my pc is running faster; BUT the same error message is still shown when i tried opening the virus chest. ahh~ :-X
