I tried to install Avast for Ubuntu (I downloaded the DEB file, so it opens up in Ubuntu Package Manager), but I get an error, it says “Wrong architecture ‘i386’”.
Here is a screeshot:

I have not messed with Ubuntu in a bit, but are you on 64 bit?
If you are, Avast! does not support that (yet).

I’m pretty sure I have the 32-bit, but I could be wrong.

Found something>>http://forum.avast.com/index.php?topic=41709.0
There is more on it also, do a forum search on that particular error code (Wrong architecture 'i386), it returns a few possibly relevant results.

I think you probably have 64 bit.
The force architecture workaround didn’t work well for me.
You could just use the av from the repos (Clam? - I don’t use Ubuntu, but most distros provide it)?
I just went back to using 32 bit linux OS on my 64 bit system - I see no difference in performance.
